Canvas LMS

The York County School Division has adopted a learning management system (LMS), Canvas, to support student learning. YCSD believes this resource will support and improve school-home partnerships by providing parents with a better understanding of the work teachers and students are completing.

Canvas Overview

Designed specifically for K-12 teachers and students, Canvas is an easy-to-use, cloud-based LMS that connects all the digital tools and resources teachers and students use daily, in the classroom and at home, in one location.

  • Teachers can post all their class content in one place, including a calendar for due dates, links to class resources like videos, posted homework assignments (and a drop-box for turning it in), etc.
  • Students can see all their assignments, due dates, and class materials in one place. They can turn in assignments and see teacher feedback.
  • Parents can "observe" their student's progress and performance in each class.

Please note that the official YCSD gradebook will continue to be located in Aspen. Grades in Canvas may not reflect the final grade for a course.

Observer Role

Parents have access to Canvas as an "observer" in each class. Observers have limited permissions to see course assignments, grades, class calendars, and more. Like students, Observers will not be able to view a course until it is published and the course has started.

What is the difference between Aspen and Canvas?

Whereas Canvas is a learning management system (LMS), Aspen is a student information system (SIS). An LMS is designed to deliver, manage and produce instructional content while an SIS is a repository of student records and data.

Aspen will continue to be used for parent contact information, daily attendance records, interim and quarterly grade reports, and other record-keeping documents.

What is Mastery Connect?

Mastery Connect is an assessment and curriculum platform designed to work within the Canvas learning management system to facilitate a variety of student assessments. Students and teachers should access Mastery Connect through the Canvas LMS application.
