This past weekend, Governor Northam announced that the state would ease all distancing and capacity restrictions on Friday, May 28. As the division’s graduation plans were developed prior to this announcement, we reconvened the committee of students, parents, staff, and school and division administrators to reevaluate the criteria used to select our commencement venue.

Governor Northam has amended the executive order limiting attendance at outdoor graduation ceremonies. Therefore, we are pleased to share that graduates will now receive eight (8) tickets for the commencement ceremonies in June. Spectators will still need to adhere to all mitigation strategies and state requirements in place the day of the ceremonies.

Graduation ceremonies represent both the finish line of a student’s K-12 academic career and the start of their future. After more than a year of navigating the course of COVID-19, it seems fitting that the BHS, GHS, THS and YHS Classes of 2021 will celebrate graduation at the Start/Finish line of the Langley Speedway on June 14 and 15, and will take place rain or shine. In the event of severe weather, such as thunder and lightning, June 16 and June 17 will serve as the alternate dates (detailed schedule provided below). The York River Academy ceremony will take place at Yorktown Middle School at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 16.

As the division prepares for the Expanded Hybrid Model to begin on March 29, we ask our staff and families to help support these efforts by continuing to conduct Daily Health Screenings before coming to work, school, or practice. Additionally, as families are still encouraged to drive and carpool to school to help support distancing on buses, please be prepared for higher traffic volume near schools during arrival and dismissal times.

The York County School division calendar committee has recommended a pre-Labor Day start to the 2021-22 school year. The committee considered multiple factors, including prior public feedback, in identifying calendar priorities. The proposal shifts the start of the school year to Monday, August 30, 2021 and the end of the school year to Friday, June 10, 2022. Identified breaks within the calendar (Thanksgiving, Winter, Spring) align with the division’s typical post-Labor Day start.

Next Friday, March 5 will now be a full school day for all students, including the Virtual Academy. While the division’s original school calendar included an early release day next week, it has also been noted that early release days may become full days while the division is in the Remote or Hybrid models. As Cohort 2 has been affected by two inclement weather days, this action helps restore in-person learning opportunities for those students. Please remember that all schools will dismiss at their normal time on Friday, March 5.

Throughout this school year, division staff have monitored established school reopening metrics to determine opportunities to expand our Hybrid Learning Model for all students enrolled in the Flexible Framework. Throughout December and January, high rates of community transmission coupled with COVID-19 isolation and quarantine protocols led to critical staffing levels and forced the division to pause in setting dates for new grade levels.
