Monarch Butterfly SanctuaryPosted on: Friday, October 10, 2014Monarch butterflies have been taking flight at elementary schools across the York County School Division in recent weeks. Students have had the chance to witness the life cycle of the monarch butterfly. A few weeks ago they were given a butterfly cage that contained milkweed, eggs, caterpillars, and chrysalis. Students made monarch observations, tagged the adult butterflies, and then released them into the wild so they may prepare for the monarch migration. What an amazing experience to watch the butterflies emerge! |
DoDEA Grant for Special EducationPosted on: Friday, September 26, 2014YCSD has just been awarded a four year DoDEA Grant for Special Education in the amount of $400,000. These funds will be spent on building a tiered system of supports for students. This will include training on the Response to Intervention process and the purchase of intensive interventions to support specialized instruction for students with disabilities. |
New Way to Fuel Up in the Morning at YHSPosted on: Friday, September 26, 2014Sodexo, the YCSD food services contractor, knows that a nutritious breakfast and academics go hand-in-hand. Recognizing that students may be running short on time before the first bell, Sodexo is ramping up breakfast nutrition by introducing the Fast Takes breakfast cart program at York High School (YHS). With the support of Dr. Crump, YHS principal, Sodexo launched the mobile program at the beginning of the school year. In just a few short weeks, breakfast participation tripled! Students can grab a freshly baked breakfast sandwich, fruit parfait or fresh fruit cup while catching up with their friends just before the bell rings. Fast Takes also offers breakfast bars, whole fruit, juice, and milk. |
YCSD Receives School Security GrantPosted on: Friday, September 26, 2014Governor Terry McAuliffe has awarded five York County School Division (YCSD) buildings with School Security Equipment grants. The state developed the grant program to assist schools with security upgrades such as video monitoring systems, electronic-access controls, visitor-identification systems, enhanced communications links between schools and law enforcement agencies, and other security upgrades. |
THS Students Kayak with Chesapeake ExperiencePosted on: Friday, September 26, 2014Tabb High School’s (THS) AP Environmental Science class recently took to the water for an educational experience. The students kayaked with Chesapeake Experience to Bay Tree Beach where they conducted a water quality investigation and identified plant and animal species to investigate diversity. They were able to collect chemical data to evaluate nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) and oxygen levels. Students also evaluated the water for turbidity and temperature. |
YCSD ENERGY STAR AwardsPosted on: Wednesday, September 24, 2014The York County School Division takes energy conservation very seriously. Since record-keeping began in 2004, the division has saved more than $3.7 million in energy costs. During this week’s monthly meeting, the School Board recognized principals of this year’s ENERGY STAR Awards. An ENERGY STAR qualified building meets very strict energy, lighting and indoor air quality standards set by EPA. These buildings use less energy, are less expensive to operate, and generate fewer greenhouse gas emissions than their counterparts. This year, 14 buildings earned the designation. |
Electronic Interims Issued in OctoberPosted on: Friday, September 19, 2014The York County School Division will expand the practice of providing electronic interim reports this year. The division has been publishing electronic interim reports for secondary students since 2012. Starting in October, all students in grades 1-12 will receive an electronic interim report. Students in kindergarten will begin receiving electronic interim reports during the second quarter of the school year. |
YMS Receives Annual School Supplies DonationPosted on: Friday, September 19, 2014On Friday, September 19, Brother Sherman Hill and Treasurer Donald Livingston presented $500 worth of school supplies to Yorktown Middle School's (YMS) administrative team on behalf of Yorkstar-Zedekiah Lodge 167. Dr. Susan Hutton, Ms. Darlene Graham, and Ms. Deborah Ellis were pleased to receive the donations, which will be distributed by the YMS guidance department to needy students. In addition, Mr. Hill presented various James Weldon Johnson reunion brochures from previous years to school librarian, Donna Myers, to add to the display cases outside of the James Weldon Johnson auditorium. |
D.A.R.E. Officer TrainingPosted on: Friday, September 19, 2014The York County School Division partnered with the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Department and the Virginia State Police to host the D.A.R.E. Officer Training program on Thursday, September 18. More than 36 officers from around the Commonwealth and the United States participated in a two-week training in Williamsburg which culminated in short classroom lessons at Coventry, Dare, Grafton Bethel, Magruder, Seaford and Tabb elementary schools. |
