Tabb High School Student Accepted into Journalism CampPosted on: Friday, March 31, 2017Malia Rosburg, a Tabb High School (THS) junior, will have the opportunity to study journalism at Newsroom By the Bay, a week-long camp at Stanford University in California, over the summer. Newsroom By the Bay is a camp whose goal is to grow students' love of journalism and educate them on the ins and the outs of the profession. Students are able to experience the city of San Francisco, the location of Stanford University, as well as get a glimpse of the college life by living on campus. Students will learn from many highly qualified teachers and educators who have years of experience in the field of journalism. Malia applied for an earned grant funding for her trip through the York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. |
York High School Army STEM TruckPosted on: Friday, March 31, 2017The United States Army "took over" Bailey Field recently to show York High School (YHS) students how science, engineering, math and technology are used by the military. The Army STEM Truck is a mobile outreach program that puts students in a scenario where they can put their knowledge and problem solving abilities to the test. More than 750 YHS students were able to experience the interactive exhibit, which is the largest group of students to ever participate. |
Students Exploring SolidsPosted on: Friday, March 24, 2017Students in Lisa McCarthy's third grade class at Mt. Vernon Elementary School created three dimensional solids using marshmallows and toothpicks. Students engaged in cooperative learning and conversation as they built square pyramids, cubes and other three dimensional figures. |
YCSD Student Art ContestPosted on: Friday, March 24, 2017The four winners of the School Board Office (SBO) Student Art Contest were revealed in a special ceremony on March 17. Nearly one hundred students from 15 schools entered the annual contest this year. Congratulations to Karmare Brownlee, fourth grade student at Bethel Manor Elementary School; Jukera Turnage, fourth grade student at Seaford Elementary; Jacob Turner, 11th grade student at Tabb High; and Katherine Wolinski, 11th grade student at York High. The students' artwork joins a permanent display of student artwork at the School Board Office. |
READBoxes at Tabb Middle SchoolPosted on: Friday, March 24, 2017Library Media Specialist Nanci Diggs has brought READboxes to Tabb Middle School (TMS). A READbox is a crate of books specifically selected for a particular unit of study. The crate contains a mixture of nonfiction, fiction, graphic novels, novels in prose, and poetry. TMS teachers make a READbox request based on a unit of study and the crate remains in the classroom for the duration of the unit. The books are utilized for research in the classroom and provide silent reading material for students who want to learn more about lesson topics. Students can check out the book to take home. This is a reading across the curriculum tool that makes it easy to expand classroom lessons for curious students. |
Grafton Middle School Student Wins International CompetitionPosted on: Friday, March 24, 2017Kyle Hu, an eighth grade student at Grafton Middle School (GMS), recently participated in the Aarhus International Piano Competition in Denmark. The competition's goal is to make a serious contribution to Danish music life and encourage young pianists from all over the world. Each year, more than a hundred young musicians from around the world apply to become participants with only 40 being invited to perform in the competition. Kyle was one of only two American students invited to attend and was named the 1st place winner in his category, which featured pianists between the ages of 11 and 16. |
Queens Lake Middle School Student HonoredPosted on: Friday, March 24, 2017Laura Rilee, an eighth grade student at Queens Lake Middle School (QLMS), has been honored for her exemplary volunteer service with a President’s Volunteer Service Award. The award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country, was granted by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. Queens Lake staff nominated Laura for national honors this fall in recognition of her volunteer service. |
Bruton High School Parking Lot ProjectPosted on: Friday, March 24, 2017Spring seems to have been delayed this year, but BrutonHigh School's parking lot will soon be much greener thanks to the commitment of a few students. Last spring, students in Darleen Hart’s AP English Language and Composition class researched ways tochange an environment and then created a plan in which to implement that change. Tyler Sakimura, AbbieMengeand JaelaWatkins collaborated on a design that would improve the aesthetics atBrutonHigh School (BHS). They found that clean schools and campuses improve the academic achievement of students. This week,that project came to life with the planting of four trees, onefor each grade level at the school, in the student parking lot. Each grade will be responsible for caring for their designated tree. |
Preparing for Middle SchoolPosted on: Friday, March 17, 2017With just three months left in the school year, fifth grades students are realizing that middle school is right around the corner. To help rising sixth graders prepare for their middle school journey, the counselors at Bethel Manor Elementary School and Tabb Middle School decided to host a Skype session. The Skype session allowed the middle school students to answer questions that rising sixth graders may have had about middle school. |
Tidewater Science and Engineering FairPosted on: Friday, March 17, 2017Seventy-two York County School Division students participated in the Tidewater Science and Engineering Fair on Saturday, March 11. Ten first place winners also qualified to participate in the Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair at Virginia Military Institute on March 25. We also want to congratulate York High School’s Suparnamaaya Prasad for advancing to the International Science and Engineering Fair in California. |
