Seaford Elementary and York High Robotics Clubs Meet

The York High School (YHS) award-winning robotics team recently visited Seaford Elementary School (SES) to share ideas with the younger students. The YHS team talked about their robot, gave a demonstration on how it works, and allowed the SES team to man the controls for a little while.


Dare Elementary and Bethel Manor Elementary Skype with Local Author

June Jones and Susan Willard, Educational Technology Facilitators (ETF) from Dare Elementary and Bethel Manor Elementary schools co-developed a Skype session that brought nine fourth and fifth grade classes together for a blended learning activity. Classes from both schools met Roberta Wiatt, a local author of children's books from Gloucester, via Skype on January 30. The ETFs provided copies of two of her books in advance so that students and teachers could prepare for the Skype session by reading the books and generating questions for the author.


Grafton Middle School Bandana Brigade

The Bandana Brigade launched Grafton Middle School's (GMS) newest Positive Behavior Support Initiative, "Under Construction, Building Our Clipper Community" at the school's pep rally on Friday, January 30. Dressed as construction workers and dancing the Ninja Rap, the Bandana Brigade took the school by storm with their dance moves! Can you dig it?


February is School Board Appreciation Month

The Virginia School Boards Association annually observes February as School Board Appreciation Month. The York County School Division wishes to acknowledge the York County School Board members and their commitment to our students, staff and community. The York County School Division (YCSD) is fortunate to have School Board members who (1) graduated from division schools, (2) have children who attend(ed) division schools, and (3) have been recognized at regional, state and national levels for their commitment to education.


GMS Masquerade Masks

Mrs. Layne's sculpture & crafts classes at Grafton Middle School (GMS) studied masquerade masks, and designed and sculpted their own out of clay. The ceramic masks were then painted and embellished with feathers, jewels and glitter.


WMES Students Create Winter Art That Inspires Writing

Second grade students at Waller Mill Elementary School (WMES) are embracing the winter weather in their school projects. They recently created their own snow globes and completed a writing activity "If I lived in a snow globe..."


We Can Be Heroes (Great Kindness Challenge)

York County School Division elementary schools participated in the Great Kindness Challenge the week of January 26. Waller Mill Elementary School wrapped up the week with a community hero tunnel. As students entered school Friday morning, they walked through a tunnel made up of local “heroes,” including representatives from the school division and the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office. The Great Kindness Challenge is a week-long proactive and positive bully prevention initiative that improves school climate and increases student engagement.


YHS Robotics Competition Winners

Congratulations to Kyle Kerner, Trent Johnson and Robert Watts, members of the York High School (YHS) FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Team, for finishing in first place (out of 25 teams) in the Virginia FIRST Eastern Regional Robotics Competition held on the campus of Norfolk State University on Saturday, January 24. This team earned one of five invitations to compete in the Virginia FIRST Robotics Competition to be held in Richmond on February 28.


Great Kindness Challenge

York County School Division elementary schools are participating in the Great Kindness Challenge the week of January 26. The Great Kindness Challenge is a proactive and positive bully prevention initiative that improves school climate and increases student engagement. The Great Kindness Challenge is one week devoted to performing as many acts of kindness as possible. Using a provided checklist of 50 kind acts, students take the challenge and prove that bullying is weak and kindness is strength. Various activities, such as community hero tunnels, are planned at each elementary school throughout the week.


Tabb Middle School Students Visit York Convalescent

As part of their transformative learning project, Lisa Spruill's public speaking class at Tabb Middle School (TMS) researched what life was like for a teenager living in the 40s and 50s. Based on their research with TMS librarian Nanci Diggs, students wrote a set of questions that they used to interview the residents at the York Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center. After the field trip, the students presented their findings to their classmates. They also discussed their experiences talking with the residents. The students shared with Mrs. Spruill, Ms. Diggs and their classmates that the project was a personally fulfilling experience.
