YHS Student Races into HistoryPosted on: Friday, October 09, 2015York High School (YHS) freshman Macy Causey was recently invited to compete for a spot in the NASCAR Drive for Diversity (D4D) development program, along with 21 other drivers. Causey not only made the cut, she made history by being the youngest driver ever invited to participate. Now in its 12th year, the annual Combine invites promising ethnically diverse and female drivers from across North America to test their skills over a three-day period in order to identify members of the NASCAR D4D Class of 2016. Driver combine participants will be evaluated on their driving skills and will also be tested on a series of strength and agility exercises. The three-day qualification will take place later this month at Langley Speedway in Hampton. |
Seaford Elementary Second Grade ScientistsPosted on: Friday, October 02, 2015As an introduction to scientific observation and animal adaptations, Seaford Elementary School second graders examined blue crabs and discussed how they are adapted to their environment. They also listened to Two Crabs in the Moonlight, a Japanese story about crab adaptations and, as a culminating activity, created t-shirts using the ancient Japanese printing art of gyotaku! Community and parent volunteers helped students in their work. |

Some schools have made adjustments to their after-school activities and programs based on weather and/or field conditions, and are communicating those changes to their school communities. If it appears that weather conditions will impact normal school operations, we will notify our staff and parents as soon as decisions are made. As a reminder, information regarding changes to school schedules (early dismissals, delayed openings or cancellations) will be announced via Connect 5 email and phone calls. Information is also posted on the division’s website, YCSD-TV, Facebook and Twitter accounts as well as on local television and radio stations. |
DES Kindergarteners Love Dot DayPosted on: Friday, September 18, 2015Story Kerr and Lindsey Blackmon, kindergarten teachers at Dare Elementary School (DES), used the story The Dot, by Peter Reynolds, to inspire creativity in their young students. They celebrated International Dot Day on September 15. After reading the story, students created a dot to leave their mark on the world. |
Science "Egg-cellence"Posted on: Friday, September 18, 2015How salty does water have to be before an egg floats? Fifth grade students at Seaford Elementary School got their hands wet this week while testing their theories regarding density. Students placed eggs in cups of water and, as expected, the eggs all sank to the bottom. They added one spoonful of salt at a time, increasing the density of the water, until the eggs floated to the top. |
NOAA B-WET GrantPosted on: Friday, September 18, 2015The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Chesapeake Bay Office has awarded the York County School Division $225,000 over three years to implement meaningful watershed educational experiences in secondary schools. Funding will be used to support professional development for teachers and field trips for students in grades 6 and 7 as well as biology and Earth Science courses. The first cohort of teachers participated in a training session this summer. Teachers received professional development in project design, scientific inquiry, and the use of field experiences as a learning tool. |
YCSD's Chopped FinalistPosted on: Friday, September 18, 2015Congratulations to Veronica Seguin, a Grafton High School and School of the Arts student, on her performance in the Food Network’s Chopped: Teen Tournament. Veronica, whose family recently moved to York County, competed against three other teenagers in the fourth episode of the tournament. She made it to the dessert round and was declared the winner of that round. Veronica is now headed to the Grand Finale to compete against three other finalists which will air on the Food Network next Tuesday at 10 p.m. |
