Project BeYOUtiful at Tabb Middle SchoolThe Tabb Middle School Builder's Club has taken a new approach to help students replace destructive negative self-talk and with words of beauty and kindness. A wall of 4x4” canvases with phrases of common negative self-talk was displayed in the school. Over the course of a week, each student and staff member removed a canvas from the wall and wrote over the negative wording with a message of positivity, hope, or acceptance.

Participants then used paint to individualize their canvas into a beautiful one-of-a-kind work of art. Over 900 canvases were joined together to create a unique mural to celebrate the power of positivity. As students transition to high school, they will take their canvas with them. Rising sixth graders make their mark by adding their words of encouragement to the wall, filling in the missing pieces. This project was brought to life by the York Foundation for Public Education’s Nancy Core Middle School Memorial Collaboration Grant.
