YCSD School Schedule Revision & Exam Information Update

This is an important announcement from the York County School Division. All schools and offices will be closed again tomorrow, Tuesday, January 26, due to persistently hazardous road conditions in residential areas throughout various portions of the county. Essential personnel will be notified by supervisors regarding work schedules.


School Schedule Update

The York County School Division has released an updated schedule for the week of January 25, 2016. Tuesday, January 26 will be a full day for all schools, with secondary schools operating on a B day schedule. Wednesday and Thursday will remain early dismissal days and Friday, January 29 will now also be an early dismissal day for all schools.


York County School Division Closed - January 25

The York County School Division will be closed Monday, January 25, 2016 for students and staff as road conditions remain hazardous in multiple parts of the county at this time. Essential personnel will be notified by supervisors regarding work schedules. All after-school and evening practices/activities scheduled for Monday have been postponed, including the monthly School Board meeting. We will share additional information regarding school schedules for the remainder of the week as we continue to review and assess conditions.


Excellence in Theatre Education Nominee

Amy Insley, York High School Drama teacher, was recently nominated for the Excellence in Theatre Education Award by The Tony Awards and Carnegie Mellon University. This special award was introduced last year and is presented to an educator that transforms the lives of students through the power of the arts at the annual Tony Awards ceremony. The award finalists will be announced in the spring.


TMS Students Visit York Convalescent

As part of their transformative project, Lisa Spruill’s Public Speaking class at Tabb Middle School (TMS) researched what life was like for a teenager living in the 40’s and 50’s. Based on research they conducted with Media Specialist Nanci Diggs in the library, students wrote a set of questions, which they used to interview the residents at the York Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center. After the field trip, the students prepared reports on the information that they collected from their interviews and presented their findings to their classmates. The students also shared how fulfilling the project was for them personally.


District PTA Reflections Results

Seven York County School Division (YCSD) students have advanced to the state level in the annual PTA Reflections program. The PTA Reflections contest is a national initiative founded in 1969 that encourages students to express themselves through the arts and be rewarded for their effort. The theme of this year’s contest was “Let Your Imagination Fly.”


THS Coach to be Hall of Fame Inductee

Tabb High School’s (THS) longtime wrestling coach and history teacher Doug Roper will be inducted in to the Virginia Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in April. In his 32-year career as head coach for the Tigers, the team has produced 10 individual state champions and a second-place finish in the state tournament during the 2006-07 season. Coach Roper’s overall record is 375-220-4.


2016 Science Fair Winners Announced

More than 300 students participated in the annual York County School Division Science Fair this week. Guest judges representing local colleges, universities and businesses reviewed all projects before selecting the winners. First, second, and third place winners are invited to apply to participate in the regional Tidewater Science Fair held at Old Dominion University in March. The fair also includes special awards sponsored by the Grafton Animal Hospital and Rebound Chiropractic, and a new award sponsored by the Yorktown Woman’s Club – Outstanding Woman in Science. Two recipients, Julia Skinner from Yorktown Middle School in the Junior Division and Binal Patel from Tabb High School in the Senior Division, each received an award of $125. Congratulations to all students who participated.


BMES Movie Night

Bethel Manor Elementary School’s PTA (BMES) invited students, staff and their families to school for a special movie night in the cafeteria last month. Families brought chairs or blankets to sit on and ordered dinner and/or concessions. School counselors, Carrie Dukes and Brittany Reed, talked about Bethel Manor's counseling program before the showing of the movie, Inside Out, which highlights recognizing and expressing one's emotions.


IB Diploma and Pinning Ceremony

The York High School (YHS) International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme held the Class of 2015 Diploma and Class of 2017 Pinning Ceremony on January 7. Members of the Class of 2015 returned from college to participate and receive their IB diplomas and certificates, which are awarded based on their final IB exams. The pinning ceremony is held to formally recognize students that have entered the rigorous IB Diploma Programme.
