Stuff the Bus for WesPosted on: Friday, December 11, 2015York High School students held their second Stuff the Bus for Wes drive this year. They spent a morning collecting donations from other YCSD schools. Donations were collected at York High, Yorktown Middle, Yorktown Elementary and Seaford Elementary schools. All the items donated will eventually be delivered to children at CHKD. YHS students launched their campaign last year to support Wes Pak, a Seaford Elementary School student, who started his CHKD Toys for Tots drive after being diagnosed with neuroblastoma. |
Students Undertake Hour of CodePosted on: Friday, December 11, 2015Students across the York County School Division have been participating in the global Hour of Code events. At Coventry Elementary School, librarian Kim Harris led students in kindergarten through fifth grade in joining millions of students worldwide taking their first steps into the world of coding. Hour of Code is meant to increase student exposure to coding and show students that anyone can code! Learning to code helps to nurture problem-solving skills, logical reasoning and creativity as well as prepare students for 21st century careers. Students were coding all week during their resource class with Harris and will continue to code throughout the year. |

Some of the activities for the students and families included class performances, cupcake decorating, bookmark making, and story time with teachers. Splat the Cat even came to visit while Kelli Lugo, kindergarten teacher, read a Splat the Cat Christmas story. |
Hearts for ParisPosted on: Friday, December 04, 2015The junior class of Tabb High School wanted to express their sympathy and offer words of encouragement to the citizens of Paris over the terrorists attacks of November 13. With the help of their class co-sponsors, Jill Candusso and Bonnie Sousa, along with assistance from French teacher Chris Elliott the idea evolved to write messages on blue, white and red hearts. Messages were collected by junior class officers and mailed to the mayor of Paris. |
BHS Students Awarded Grand PrizePosted on: Friday, December 04, 2015Three Bruton High School students have been named the grand prize winners in the 2015 “No 2 Distracted Driving” video contest. For the third year in a row, local Hampton Roads high school students joined with Hall Automotive, Cox Communications, Geico and Drive Smart Virginia in their commitment towards safe driving in the community by creating and submitting videos highlighting the dangers of distracted driving. Three of the four videos selected as finalists were submitted by students at Bruton High School. The videos were posted online then, over a three week period in November, visitors to No2DD.com viewed the videos and voted for their favorites. |

Waller Mill Elementary Community Service Walk to FISHPosted on: Wednesday, November 25, 2015Waller Mill Elementary School students in grades K-5 made the walk with canned foods to FISH. FISH is an all-volunteer not-for-profit agency providing help to residents of the greater Williamsburg area. FISH depends entirely upon a caring community for food, clothing, volunteers and financial donations, in order to serve our neighbors in need. Waller Mill students know what it means to serve the community. |
