2016 Science Fair Winners Announced

More than 300 students participated in the annual York County School Division Science Fair this week. Guest judges representing local colleges, universities and businesses reviewed all projects before selecting the winners. First, second, and third place winners are invited to apply to participate in the regional Tidewater Science Fair held at Old Dominion University in March. The fair also includes special awards sponsored by the Grafton Animal Hospital and Rebound Chiropractic, and a new award sponsored by the Yorktown Woman’s Club – Outstanding Woman in Science. Two recipients, Julia Skinner from Yorktown Middle School in the Junior Division and Binal Patel from Tabb High School in the Senior Division, each received an award of $125. Congratulations to all students who participated.


BMES Movie Night

Bethel Manor Elementary School’s PTA (BMES) invited students, staff and their families to school for a special movie night in the cafeteria last month. Families brought chairs or blankets to sit on and ordered dinner and/or concessions. School counselors, Carrie Dukes and Brittany Reed, talked about Bethel Manor's counseling program before the showing of the movie, Inside Out, which highlights recognizing and expressing one's emotions.


IB Diploma and Pinning Ceremony

The York High School (YHS) International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme held the Class of 2015 Diploma and Class of 2017 Pinning Ceremony on January 7. Members of the Class of 2015 returned from college to participate and receive their IB diplomas and certificates, which are awarded based on their final IB exams. The pinning ceremony is held to formally recognize students that have entered the rigorous IB Diploma Programme.


YCSD Elementary Schools Honored

The Virginia Board of Education recently recognized Bethel Manor and Dare elementary schools as high achieving Title I schools. Bethel Manor (BMES) was one of nine schools named as a Title I Highly Distinguished School, while Dare was recognized as a Title I Distinguished school for the fifth consecutive year. These honors are based on student achievement on state assessments during the 2013-14 and 2014-15 school years.


YES Second Graders Raise Funds for Military Families

Military life offers many challenges for service members and their families. Students at Yorktown Elementary School (YES) believe that one challenge they should not have to face is providing their families with a happy holiday. For the third year, YES second graders hosted a Market Days activity to support the Fort Eustis Army Community Service (ACS) Holiday Drive. Students planned and created items to sell for Market Days. Items ranged in price from .05 to $2.00 to ensure that there was something that was affordable for everyone. Students and families from all grade levels were invited to shop. Students raised $664 to purchase toys for families on Ft. Eustis. On Thursday, December 17, the director of ACS and several soldiers stationed at Ft. Eustis visited the school to accept the gifts


National Spelling Bee Participants

Mt. Vernon Elementary School students are participating in the National Spelling Bee for the first time this year. In December, students in first through fifth grade participated in the classroom round. These students will now go on to participate in the School Spelling Bee to be held in January.


Third Grade Students Recognized for Kindness

Mallory Pillsbury's third grade class at Yorktown Elementary School entered the “Choose Kind” campaign after reading about it in the Scholastic magazine. The campaign is based on the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio. The book discusses the importance of accepting one another and not bullying those who are different from you. The author also challenged readers to place a marble in a jar for every act of kindness and send a picture once the jar was full. The first 500 classrooms in the nation to complete the challenge receive an official Choose Kind banner to display outside of their classroom. Once the campaign is over, the campaign company will randomly select 5 of the 500 classrooms to win a pizza party and a video chat with R.J. Palacio!


YCSD Finance Awards

The York County School Division finance team was recognized at the December School Board meeting for earning multiple budgeting and financial reporting awards. The Fiscal Year 2016 Budget was awarded the Meritorious Budget Award from the Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) and the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA). In addition, the Fiscal Year 2014 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) was awarded the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting Award from ASBO and the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting Award from GFOA. These are the highest forms of recognition awarded in the field of governmental/school district budgeting and


SES Students Have a Native American Powwow

Second graders at Seaford Elementary School (SES) enjoyed culminating activities to celebrate the end of a Native American Unit in History. First, the students participated in a Native American Powwow using the shakers and rain sticks they made in art class. Next, the students rotated through different second grade classrooms to participate in crafts relating to the Native Americans including making a pinch pot, sandpainting, making a buffalo skin story, and making an Indian headdress.


SOA Students Headed to Bowl Game

Students from the York County School of the Arts (SOA) dance program will be spending part of their winter break in sunny Florida. Twenty-six dancers were selected to perform in the pre-game show and the half-time show at the Russell Athletic Bowl Game on Tuesday, December 29. In addition, the SOA students will dance in a parade through Universal Studios and attend four separate master classes with world renowned choreographers Chuck Maldanado, CiCi Kelley, Derek Mitchell, and Rosero McCoy.
