Science took center stage at Yorktown Elementary Math, Science, and Technology Magnet School as fifth graders explored chemical changes. By conducting a series of science experiments, students were able to discover the individual chemicals associated with an initial chemical reaction they observed.


Mt. Vernon Elementary School Students Create Pulley System

Third grade students in Chelsea Hall's class at Mt. Vernon Elementary School (MVES) have been learning about simple machines. This week they worked in groups to create a pulley system to raise a flag. They were given a variety of materials, a planning and data-gathering sheet, and a deadline for completion. The final projects were then displayed in the school.


Magruder Elementary School Book Promotions

The staff at Magruder Elementary School (MES) took a new approach to help build a love of reading with their students and parents this school year by creating a special "library" of book promotions. Each staff member created a book cover about a children's book they enjoy and shared why this book was so meaningful to them. The children, parents, and other staff have loved reading each "book" on their way to the school’s media center each day.


Dare Elementary School Kindergarteners Make Applesauce

Lindsey Blackmon's kindergarten class at Dare Elementary School (DES) spent time learning all about apples last month. They studied the seasons, their five senses and ended the week making a tasty treat — applesauce.


School Supplies Donated to Yorktown Middle School

Members of the Yorkstar-Zedekiah Lodge #167 and Golden Rule Chapter 66 of the Order of the Eastern Star recently delivered school supplies to Yorktown Middle School (YMS). Members of both organizations donate annually to ensure that YMS students have what they need throughout the year. Ten boxes were filled with backpacks, paper, pencils, composition notebooks, hand sanitizer, hand wipes, and more.

Lions Club Visits Mt. Vernon Elementary School

Mt. Vernon Elementary School welcomed the Lions Club Volunteers to the school this month to conduct vision screenings for all of our kindergarten students. The school and the division appreciate the support of the local Lions Club.


Bringing Science Alive at Bethel Manor Elementary School

Students in Robin Ship's third grade class at Bethel Manor Elementary School conducted a Wiggle Worm activity in science class. The students were asked three questions and had to give a hypothesis before performing the experiment. The students were placed in groups to answer the following questions using live worms: which environment do worms prefer? (wet or dry); which surface texture do worms prefer? (rough or smooth); and which lighting condition do worms prefer? (light or dark).


September Student Service Awards

The School Board honored students from Seaford Elementary School (SES) and Grafton High School (GHS) as the Student Service Award recipients during the September Board meeting. Wes Pak, a fifth grade student at SES, is active in Seaford’s Jr. Monarch and More Club and maintained honor roll status last year. What makes his accomplishments even more impressive is that Wes has been battling neuroblastoma, a form of pediatric cancer, for five years. Through this time, his spirit, positivity and smile have not changed. Shortly after his initial diagnosis, Wes started a toy drive for the oncology patients at CHKD called Wes' Wish: Piles of Smiles for a Child with Cancer Toy Drive. Each year it grows larger and now provides Christmas for the patients, siblings, and parents.


Waller Mill Elementary School Student is a Published Artist

Students at Waller Mill Elementary School (WMES) participated in the national Kindness Matters: 50 Ways to Create a Kinder World art contest in January 2016. School staff recently learned that an artistic piece by WMES fifth grader Reagan Murphy was selected to be one of 50 showcased in an international book.
