York High School Teacher Earns National Award

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has named Amy Insley, York High School drama teacher, a 2016 Kennedy Center/Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher. Fourteen teachers were selected from a pool of nominations received through the Kennedy Center's website. This prestigious national award, and the $10,000 accompanying grant, is designed to recognize American teachers by spotlighting their “extraordinary impact on the lives of students.”


YCSD Students Advance to National Competition

Three York County School Division students earned first place honors at the state level of this year’s PTA Reflections program. The PTA Reflections contest is a national initiative founded in 1969 that encourages students to express themselves through the arts and be rewarded for their effort. The theme of this year’s contest was “Let Your Imagination Fly.”


Air Force Band visits BMES

On Friday, March 11, the Air Force Heritage Band performed for Bethel Manor Elementary School's (BMES) third-fifth grade students. During the performance, band members described their instruments and taught students about each one. One student participated in an experiment to hear the different sounds a bassoon makes!


THS Student Wins Tidewater Science & Engineering Fair

Dozens of YCSD students competed in the 65th annual Tidewater Science and Engineering Fair on Saturday, March 12. Robin Bai from Tabb High School (THS) and the Governor’s School for Science and Technology (GSTT) won the overall grand prize and will represent the Tidewater region at the 2016 International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, Arizona.


Skyping Adjectives

Yorktown Elementary School (YES) students in Amy McCord's second grade class recently participated in an interactive adjective lesson with a second grade classroom in Maine. The students sent descriptions of themselves to each other. Based on the adjectives they used to describe themselves, the students in each had to draw pictures of the other students. During the skyping lesson, students shared their pictures and got to see how close their drawing was to the actual person.


MVES KidWind Regional Competition

Mt. Vernon Elementary School (MVES) students recently participated in the Regional KidWind Challenge in Virginia Beach. The girls’ team placed second overall in addition to winning The Judges’ Award and a Teamwork Award. They have been invited to participate in the National KidWind Challenge being held in New Orleans in May. The KidWind Challenge is the ultimate wind energy learning experience for students. Students around the country are able to explore wind energy through the hands-on, investigative, and exciting challenges. The goal of the KidWind Challenge is to help students discover the promise and limitations of wind energy technology, design, build, and test a functional creative wind turbine, and compete with their peers in a supportive environment.


YCSD School Level Teachers of the Year

Congratulations to the 19 York County School Division (YCSD) teachers who were selected by their peers as their school’s Teacher of the Year. The York County Teacher of the Year program recognizes one teacher at each division school. A panel of teachers and administrators will select a division level Teacher of the Year from among these honorees later this year. The division teacher of the year represents YCSD in the state's Teacher of the Year competition.


TMS Battle of the Books Competition Team

On March 9, students from Tabb Middle School battled against two other teams in the middle school Battle of the Books County Competition at the Tabb Library. Participants read twelve books from September to February and competed in a school battle in February. The winners of that battle became members of the competition team. To prepare for county competition, students wrote questions from each of the texts and quizzed one another.


YCSD Finance Awards

The Association of School Business Officials (ASBO) International has awarded York County School Division its Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting award for having met or exceeded the program’s high standards for financial reporting and accountability. The district was recognized for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the fiscal year ending 2015


MVES SCA Student Service Project

The Mt. Vernon Elementary School (MVES) Student Council participated in the Pennies for Patients Program designed to help fund research for childhood leukemia. The Mustang students and families raised $1,738.62 for the cause. Sya LaManque's fifth grade class raised the most money, over $200. The winning class will receive a delicious pasta snack from the Pennies for Patients Program.
