The teachers created winter-themed magnets that they sent home with students in grades 3-5. The snowman magnet includes the websites for all the electronic educational services children have been using in class, and that they can also log into from home. |
Coding at Bethel Manor Elementary SchoolPosted on: Wednesday, December 21, 2016Kelly Prats, the library media specialist at Bethel Manor Elementary School (BMES), helped incorporate the Hour of Code global movement into school activities in December by teaching students some coding skills during their library time. The students used OZOBOTS as a way to incorporate STEMS in the learning process. Hour of Code is a global initiative designed tointroduce millions of students to one hour of computer science and computer programming during Computer Science EducationWeek (December 5-11). The largest learning event in history,the Hour of Code reaches over 100 million students in over 180 countries with activities available in over 45 languages. |
Toys for Tots DonationsPosted on: Wednesday, December 21, 2016Schools throughout the York County School Division support numerous charitable organizations, and two schools have really jumped in to support Toys for Tots this holiday season. Grafton High School’s (GHS) math department collected enough toys to fill a truck and trailer, while third grade students at Magruder Elementary School (MES) raised money for the program by creating holiday goods to sell to their peers. The MES students learned about making goods, providing a service, and supply and demand while also learning how to help others. |
Yorktown Elementary School Gingerbread ExchangePosted on: Friday, December 16, 2016Yorktown Elementary School (YES) kindergartners in Lisa Coaty’s class are taking part in an exchange with a class of kindergartners in Alabama. The students created gingerbread men and wrote stories that they mailed to the class in Alabama with the help of the school secretary Tina Connell. YES students are now receiving gingerbread men and stories in return. |
Spreading Kindness and Warmth at Grafton High SchoolPosted on: Friday, December 16, 2016The Grafton High School (GHS) Student Council Association (SCA) and National Honor Society (NHS) teamed up to purchase winter clothing for children in need this holiday season. Each student organization donated $300 then challenged the student body to donate a matching $300. As an incentive, Principal Royce Hart promised to play the role of Santa once students reached the additional donation goal. Not only did they reach their goal, they surpassed it and raised an additional $464. Students went shopping after school to purchase coats, gloves and additional clothing which will be given to 17 young children. |

Grafton Middle School Students Study Chesapeake Bay WatershedPosted on: Friday, December 09, 2016Grafton Middle School (GMS) sixth grade science classes took a field trip to Back Creek Park in Seaford recently to explore aspects of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. They kayaked and learned about water quality and abiotic factors that affect the health of the water, and then made observations of the wetland along the edges of the creek. They were also able to go crabbing off the dock using chicken legs. Students will use their experience to create posters and bookmarks with ways to “save the bay”. |

Parent volunteers set up work stations for the students, who then led the instructional activities. |
Bethel Manor Elementary School Is All About Those BooksPosted on: Friday, December 09, 2016Members of Page Turners shared their favorite books with their fellow students at Bethel Manor Elementary School (BMES) during a recent visit. Page Turners is an after-school club for fourth and fifth grade students. Kelly Prats, the elementary school’s librarian, started the club to promote literacy and a love for reading. Students were engaged and looked forward to having great readers and great books in the classroom. |
Theatre Performance at Seaford Elementary SchoolPosted on: Friday, December 09, 2016The Seaford Elementary School (SES) PTA arranged for Virginia Rep On Tour to perform for students this month. Formerly known as Theatre IV, Virginia Rep On Tour is a nonprofit, professional theatre located in Richmond that sends actors to schools across the state to perform familiar stories, historical narratives and holiday specials. SES students enjoyed the production Benjamin Franklin’s Kite, an education play designed to bring history and science curriculum to life by telling the 250-year-old story of Ben Franklin rendering scientists “thunderstruck” with his discovery that lightning held electricity. |
