Tabb Middle School Student Wins Essay Contest

Tabb Middle School student Mason Wagner was recently named the first place, eighth grade winner of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics- Hampton Roads Section (AIAA-HRS) Middle School Essay Contest. Mason was recognized for his achievement at an awards banquet on May 9 at NASA Langley Research Center. In addition to a $300 monetary award, Mason's entry will be forwarded to the AIAA Space Systems Technical Committee for additional judging.


York High School Student Earns National Recognition

Emma Reilly, a York High School (YHS) freshman, recently received an Award of Merit from the National PTA as part of the organization’s 2016-17 Reflections Art Program. Emma had previously earned first place at the district and state level in the category of Literature.


YCSD Administrative Appointments

The York County School Division is pleased to announce two administrative appointments for the 2017-18 school year: Dr. Aaron Butler has been named as the new director of School Administration, beginning July 1. Aaron started his career as a socialstudies teacher and was previously an assistant principal in the York County School Division at BrutonHigh School and Yorktown Middle School. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Clemson University and his graduate degrees from the College of William & Mary. He is currently the supervisor of Student Services in Williamsburg-James City County, overseeing student discipline matters and student-related Title IX investigations among other duties. During his tenure, he wrote and supervised a state grant for implementing a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) and was the Virginia Department of Education’s 2016 Trailblazer Award recipient.


YCSD Honors Staff

Congratulations to the 2017 York County School Division (YCSD) Employee Recognition Program recipients! Amy Hunter, a health teacher at Grafton High School, was honored with the Spirit of Education Award. This award recognizes employees who have made aparticularly meaningful contribution to the school and/or community that goes well beyond normal duties, expectations and responsibilities. She and Master Deputy Jeff Charville, the school’s SRO, were recognized for their exceptional actions earlier this year when faced with a classroom crisis, took immediate action and worked together to save a student’s life. The Superintendent’s Award recognizes employees who have made a particularlymeaningful contribution to furthering the school division’s mission statement. ChrissyWagner, coordinator of Language Arts & Social Studies - Grades K-5, brings passion, professionalism and commitment to her job each and every day.


STEM Teacher of the Year

Yorktown Middle School’s (YMS) Drew Maloney has been selected by the Langley AFA chapter as the middle school STEM Teacher of the Year. Maloney is also the Teacher of the Year for YMS. The program recognizes classroom teachers for their accomplishments and achievements in exciting K-12 students about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and preparing them to use and contribute to tomorrow’s technologies. Maloney will be honored at a luncheon in May.


Yorktown Middle School Student Wins County Essay Contest

Yorktown Middle School (YMS) seventh grader, Akira Durham, is the winner of York County’s “If I were County Administrator” essay contest sponsored by the York County Public Library this month. The contest, open to all York County middle school students, asked the question: "What would you do as County Administrator to keep York County a great place to live?” The submissions were then read and judged by York County Administrator Neil Morgan who selected Akira as the winner and recipient of a $50 Amazon gift card. In his essay, Akira wrote, “I would want to make our county as safe as it could possibly be, as clean as it could be and make York County very well educated to create an ideal environment for friendship, teamwork and communication, which will lead to a successful county that runs well.”


Honoring Service Members

Students and staff throughout the York County School Division have spent the month of April honoring our Armed Forces in recognition of the Month of the Military Child, celebrated every April. Students and staff divisionwide joined in the “Purple Up” campaign and wore purple on April 21. Waller Mill Elementary School also started the day by having a student play “The Star-Spangled Banner” for the morning announcements. Students at Bethel Manor Elementary School dressed up like their parents by wearing military gear. Yorktown Elementary School hosted a parade to honor military students and their families. Active duty and veteran parents joined their children in a parade through the halls of the school on Thursday, April 27. Students and staff members cheered to show appreciation for the service and sacrifice of military-connected families. More than 300 students and their families were recognized during the parade.


Tabb Elementary School Celebrates 40 Years

Tabb Elementary School (TES) held a special event this week in honor of the school’s 40th anniversary. Student artwork lining the hallways celebrated popular concepts and items from the 70s, when the school opened, such as lava lamps, roller skates and disco balls. Artifacts from the school and popular culture from various decades were also on display in the school library and the event culminated with a program of student performances.


ACT-SO Competition

Fourteen YCSD high school students participated in the ACT-SO Local Competition in April. First place Gold winners include Amiah Brown-Drawing (BHS), Kyle McKnight- Painting (YHS), David Jackson- Poetry Performance (BHS), Cherelle Mathews-Drama (BHS), Sydney McGhee-Dance (GHS), and Alyssa Hernandez-Vocal Music (BHS). These students will participate in the national competition in Baltimore, Maryland in July.


Tabb Middle School SeaPerch Winners

The Tabb Middle School (TMS) SeaPerch teams had an award-winning weekend at the regional competition in April. The team of Jonah Hutchison, Andrew Zhou, Noah Simsic, and Daniel Khalil received 2nd place overall for having placed in 3 events: 2nd place in Obstacle Course, 3rd place in Finesse, and 1st place in Presentation. They have been invited to represent the region at the national competition in Atlanta, Georgia in May. Another TMS team with team members Mackenzie Brogran, Tanner Hart, and Aiden Turner received 3rd place overall.
