Mt. Vernon Elementary School Power of Persuasion WritingPosted on: Friday, February 10, 2017Fifth graders at Mt. Vernon Elementary School (MVES) recently participated in the school’s first Power of Persuasion Writing Fair. As part of the division’s new literacy model, fifth grade students craft a persuasive essay during the second quarter of the school year. To celebrate the conclusion of their writing this quarter, the students created a fair where they could share their writing sample, give a speech, or share a Sway presentation to fellow students, parents and community members. Some of their powerful arguments supported the need for middle school tennis teams, the need to always wear bike helmets, and various health-related topics. |
Great Kindness ChallengePosted on: Friday, February 10, 2017Elementary students across York County took part in the annual Great Kindness Challenge in January. The Great Kindness Challenge is a national initiative that many school systems across the nation have adopted. The mantra is One Week. One Checklist. Infinite Happiness. Kim Stratton's fifth grade class at Seaford Elementary School elected to participate by creating “Choose Kind” t-shirts on which each student wrote something about their classmate. She says the best part was when the kids were able to see all the nice words their classmates used to describe them. |
First Graders Plant Flower BulbsPosted on: Friday, February 03, 2017According to the groundhog we’re going to get six more weeks of winter, but Mt. Vernon Elementary School first graders are ready for spring. Taking advantage of warmer weather this week, the students took turns planting daffodil and tulip bulbs in the flower beds around the school. They are hoping the groundhog is wrong because they want the warm weather to help their newly-planted flowers grow! |
York High School Earns Environmental Action AwardPosted on: Friday, February 03, 2017AskGreen.org has selected York High School (YHS) as a recipient of its annual Environmental Action Award for the school’s water bottle filling stations. The stations give students the option of refilling water bottles throughout the school day without using a sink or water fountain, which can be messy and unsanitary. AskHRgreen.org selected the project because of its focus on the quality, safety and affordability of tap water; the importance of reusing and reducing plastic in the waste stream; and the legacy created by the project to serve as a reminder for students for years to come. The school will receive a plaque and $100 award at a ceremony later this month. |
Student Art DisplayPosted on: Friday, February 03, 2017The annual High School Student Art Show, featuring the work of 17 Bruton High School students, is underway at the Williamsburg Contemporary Art Center (WCAC). The exhibit will run through Friday, March 10 at WCAC’s new location: 110 Westover Avenue, between Richmond Road and Lafayette Street. In addition to the Bruton High artwork, submissions from six other Williamsburg area high schools will be on display. |
First Responder FridaysPosted on: Friday, February 03, 2017Members of the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office have been spending a lot of time at Magruder Elementary School this year, along with Fire & Life Safety staff and Virginia State Police troopers – and students and staff are thrilled to have them there! It’s all part of the school’s new First Responder Friday program where the first responders are invited to sit and have lunch with the students. The program gives students a chance to get familiar with first responders outside of an emergency setting and learn about safety. |
Mt. Vernon Elementary School Students Experiment with Static ElectricityPosted on: Friday, January 27, 2017Students in Kim Bartles’ fourth grade class at Mt. Vernon Elementary School (MVES) have been experimenting with static electricity. The science lab contained four different stations where the students created hypotheses, conducted experiments, and recorded data. |
Tackling Teamwork and Innovation at Waller Mill Elementary SchoolPosted on: Friday, January 27, 2017Teamwork and innovation have been the theme in resource classes at Waller Mill Elementary School (WMES) this week. Kathryn Nabors challenged her physical education students to work together by cooperative cup stacking. The students paired up and were each able to use just one hand to develop different patterns with the cups. In the library, students read The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by A. Wolf and then addressed the idea of whether the wolf really could blow down the house. Students were challenged to build a house of toothpicks and playdough that the wolf (a.k.a. blow dryer with a wolf mask) couldn’t blow down. |
Tabb High Key Club Helps in CommunityPosted on: Friday, January 27, 2017The Tabb High School Key Club volunteered to help the Boys and Girls Club Thrift Store in Newport News, VA on Saturday January 21. Key Clubbers and sponsor Dowler Young organized merchandise, helped patrons and performed other general housekeeping duties throughout the day. |
YCSD Student Art on Display in RichmondPosted on: Friday, January 27, 2017NASA Langley Research Center held a nationwide art contest for students in kindergarten through grade 12 to commemorate NASA's centennial celebration. While the results of the contest won’t be released until sometime in February, artwork from five York County School Division students have been selected to be among 24 that will be on display at the Virginia General Assembly Building in Richmond for the duration of this year’s General Assembly session. Lanson Shen, a first grader at Seaford Elementary School, was one of the youngest artists recognized and one of only two first graders included in this group. |
