New Principal for THS

The York County School Division is pleased to announce that Paul Rice has been approved by the School Board to serve as principal of Tabb High School beginning January 2. He will replace interim principal Royce Hart. Mr. Rice has nearly 20 years’ experience in education, having begun his teaching career in Hanover County. In 2003, he joined the York County School division as a history teacher at York High School. During his time at York High School he taught US History, IB History, and IB Geography. He has spent the last two years as principal of Grafton Middle School and has previously served as an assistant principal at Queens Lake Middle School and York High School. A graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University, he earned his master’s degree from the College of William & Mary.


YCSD Make-Up Day Announcement

The York County School Division has adjusted the 2018-19 school calendar to make up missed instructional time due to hurricanes Florence and Michael. Monday, November 12, 2018 is now a regular instructional day for all students. Wednesday, December 19, 2018 will now be a full instructional day for all students.


FY20 Operating Budget Community Input Sessions

The York County School Division is in the initial stages of developing the FY20 Operating Budget (July 1, 2019-June 30, 2020) and wants your input. We’ve scheduled four community sessions in the coming weeks to listen to your ideas and questions regarding the division’s budget.


YCSD Make-Up Day Survey

As you know, YCSD students have missed five days of learning this school year due to Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Michael. The division has extended one school day (Dec. 19) to address some of this lost instructional time and is now reviewing additional make-up options. We would like your input before the superintendent makes further adjustments to the 2018-19 school calendar. Division leaders have identified three possible options to schedule a full school day and provide students with important academic support during the first semester – Monday, Nov. 12, Wednesday, Nov. 21, or Thursday, December 20. Please complete a brief online survey by 5 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 18., to share your preference as to which day the division should use as a make-up day. Makeup plans will be announced by phone, email, and all social media platforms. A revised calendar will also be posted on the school division website and all school websites.


YCSD Weekend Activities

While Dominion Energy has been able to restore power to all but six of the schools impacted by Tropical Storm Michael, all activities and events for today and tonight remain canceled. At this time the following schools remain without power - Bruton High, Queens Lake Middle, Dare Elementary, Magruder Elementary, and the Grafton Complex and will remain closed for activities until power is restored.


BMES Teacher Makes Personal Connection

As just about everyone at Bethel Manor Elementary School knows, Katherine Burgoyne is not just a fifth grade teacher – she’s also a Pittsburgh Steelers superfan. So what happens when one of her students - Kingston Samuels - happens to be a Baltimore Ravens fan? You find a way to engage students - Ms. Burgoyne promised Kingston she would dye her hair purple if the Ravens beat the Steelers. True to her word, Ms. Burgoyne rocked purple hair and was a good sport. She is an amazing example at making student connections and fostering those relationships.


WMES Students Participate in Themed Week

What's better than a theme day at school - how about a theme week? Waller Mill Elementary students particiated in the first ever themed week of resource classes. The students were able to practice balance for when a storm comes and a pirate is on a ship, they were able to dress like a pirate, walk with a peg leg, sing about being a pirate and much much more! Get ready Waller Mill Families... under the sea week is just around the corner!


All YCSD Schools Fully Accredited

The York County School Division has once again earned 100% accreditation status according to data released by the Virginia Department of Education today. This year’s school accreditation ratings are based on a revised system for calculating school accreditation which went into effect this year.


2018-19 Calendar Adjustment

The York County School Division has made an adjustment to the 2018-19 school calendar to address the school closings due to the mandatory evacuation order for Hurricane Florence. Wednesday, December 19, will be extended from an early release day to a full school day. A portion of the division’s banked time will also be used to offset the missed days. If the division experiences additional school closings, as has happened during winter months in recent years, additional schedule adjustments may be made using identified early release days, teacher workdays and student holidays.


Two YCSD Students Earn National Recognition

Please join us in congratulating two YCSD students who were recently named National Merit Semifinalists. Derek Yang, a senior at Grafton High School, and Nicholas Talati, a senior at Tabb High School, are among more than 16,000 students nationwide on to earn this prestigious distinction from the National Merit Scholarship Program.
