2019 Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) Awards

The 2019 Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) awards have been released. We are proud to report that YCSD ranked prominently on the list, which recognizes schools and divisions based on student achievement and other performance indicators from the 2017-18 school year data. Mt. Vernon Elementary School was one of 90 schools in the entire state to earn the Board of Education Excellence Award for meeting all state and federal accountability benchmarks and making significant progress toward goals for increased student achievement and expanded educational opportunities set by the board. Nine schools, and the division, earned the Distinguished Achievement Award for meeting all state and federal benchmarks and making progress toward the goals of the governor and the board.

TMS KidWind Competition Winners

Huge shout out to Tabb Middle School’s Wind Turbine Team, Gone With the Wind, on bringing home a national championship from the 2019 KidWind Competition in Houston, Texas!!! The competition included middle and high school students from 36 states. TMS students competed against 52 other middle school teams. Alice Fang, Jacoby Melton, Kyle Ray, and Katelyn Wiltz, took 1st place as National Champions and received a Power Output Champion award for producing so much power. The competition has various aspects that are calculated into the final scores. The students are judged on the efficiency of their wind turbines but also must present their designs and data and how their team progressed using the engineering design process. There were two instant challenges where students had to work as a team to complete tasks, as well as, a knowledge quiz that tested what they know about renewable energy in the U.S. and other leading countries around the world.

Kindergarten Standards-based Report Card

The York County School Division will launch a standards-based report card for all kindergarten students beginning next school year. Information about the new report card was shared with the School Board at Monday night's work session. Over the past few years, teachers and staff have shared that they wanted a developmentally appropriate assessment in grades K-2, that showed student progress over time in reading, writing, and math. The division's current report card only reports a quarterly grade for each subject area with limited details regarding the criteria or skills that helps make up that grade. The standards-based report card also provides parents with more information about their student’s academic progress so they can partner intheir child’s education. Bethel Manor Elementary School used the new kindergarten report card as part of a pilot program this year and will expand to include a pilot report card for first grade next year.

GBES Great Computer Challenge

The Grafton Bethel Elementary School Great Computer Challenge team competed on May 4, 2019 at Old Dominion University. These second graders competed in four categories. The Visual Programming Team included Jin, Ethan and Jude. The Graphic Design Team included Charlotte, Jaleela, and Charlton. The Desktop Presentation Team was Hazel, Kyle, and Liam. The Desktop Publishing Team included James, Daphne, and Hayden. The team brought home 1 good rating and 2 excellent ratings. So proud of all their hard work. Congratulations!

GHS Student Selected 2019 Presidential Scholar

Please join us in congratulating Katelynne Berland, a senior at Grafton High School and New Horizon's Regional Governor School for Science and Technology. This week, she was named as one of the 161 students nationwide selected as a 2019 Presidential Scholar. Seniors earn this prestigious recognition for their accomplishments in academics, the arts and career, and technical education. Berland was one of only two selected from Virginia. Katelynne recently presented at the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium in Albuquerque, and will be presenting again at the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix next week. She will also be presenting at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Los Angeles this July. She will be pursuing a biomedical engineering degree next year at Georgia Tech.

Tabb High Club Earth

Members of the THS Club Earth volunteered their time to collect recycling for all of Tabb High School. This spring they went with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's Elisabeth Reed Carter Virginia Environmental Program to explore the health of Broad Bay at First Landing State Park. They explored physical and chemical parameters, seined to evaluate biodiversity and even learned about the categories of pollutants found in the Chesapeake Bay!

THS Student Earns Perfect ACT Score

A Tabb High student has achieved a rare accomplishment - she earned a perfect score on her college admissions test. Junior Paola Amadeo scored the highest possible ACT composite score - a 36. The ACT consists of tests in English, mathematics, reading and science, each scored on a scale of 1-36. A student's composite score is the average of the four test scores. To put this in perspective, only around two-tenths of 1 percent of students who take the ACT earn this top score

Tidewater Regional Seaperch ROV Competition

Hard work really does pay off!! Over the last two months, 20 Tabb Middle School budding engineers spent 20 hours working in six collaborative teams to design, build, and test an underwater robot and controller. These students participated in the Tidewater Regional Seaperch ROV competition in April and received 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards in 3 categories, including the overall Championship award.

YFPE School Bus Pull

Twelve teams came out for the inaugural York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. School Bus Pull this Saturday - despite the soggy conditions. We thank those hearty souls for supporting this brand new fundraiser and truly flexing their muscles while they pulled for our schools! It was a very tight competition to see which team could pull a full-size school bus the fastest! Congratulations to Team "Tabb Wrestling" - the first place team with the fastest pull time of 16.75 seconds. Second place when to the Average Gregs, and the NautiBoyz brought home third place. We also want to thank the event sponsors - ITA International, LLC and Papa Murphy's.

YCSD After-school Activities Canceled - April 19

All York County School Division after-school and evening activities, including athletics, are canceled Friday, April 19, due to the possibility of severe weather this evening. No changes have been made to weekend activity schedules at this time, though we will continue to monitor and evaluate conditions.
