Children who reach the age of 5 by September 30 of the start of a new school year may enroll as a kindergarten student in YCSD. Students with birthdays after September 30 must wait until the following school year to attend public school in Virginia.

For students transferring from other school divisions, it is vital that school records be forwarded in a timely manner. The best way to ensure a smooth transition is to provide your child's current school with contact information for their new YCSD school. Once records are received, placement and class schedules can be set.

The division's pre-registration online form is designed to enable parents to input their information directly into the division's student management system. This saves both the parent and the school time during the enrollment process and also helps reduce potential errors. To complete the enrollment process, families will need to make an appointment with the school the child is enrolling in and provide several documents after they have pre-registered their child.

Incoming military connected students that are eligible to enroll in the school division may register, remotely or in-person, for courses and other academic programs. Please contact your zoned school directly, or the Coordinator of Enrollment and Attendance at 757-833-7001 for more information. Arrangements will be made to register every student in whatever way is best for each family.
