Advanced Placement

Certain high school courses are designated as Advanced Placement (AP). The requirements and expectations of these courses exceed those of regular grade-level courses in a particular content area. High School students who have completed prerequisite courses are eligible for Advanced Placement courses as well as Virtual Virginia Advanced Placement courses.

Students enrolled in an Advanced Placement course are encouraged to take the Advanced Placement exam for that course. Many colleges offer advanced placement, college credit or both to students who obtain satisfactory grades - typically to those students who score a 3 or higher on an AP exam. Taking Advanced Placement exams does not automatically enable a student to gain college credits. Credit award decisions are made by individual colleges.
