Tabb Middle Students Win YCSD District ReflectionsPosted on: Friday, February 28, 2014A special thank you to all of the participants in the 2013-2014 Reflections contest this year. This competition's theme was "Believe, Dream, Inspire." The annual contest is sponsored by the York County Council PTA/PTSA in conjunction with the National PTA. Students throughout the York County School Division (YCSD) submitted original entries at their school level in the following categories: Dance Choreography, Film/Video Production, Musical Composition, Literature, Photography and Visual Arts. Each category is broken down into four divisions of competition - Primary (Preschool - Grade 2), Intermediate (Grades 3-5), Middle (Grades 6-8) and Senior (Grades 9-12). All entries are judged on artistic merit, creativity, mastery of the medium and interpretation of the theme. |
Preschool Applications Now Being AcceptedPosted on: Friday, February 28, 2014The York County School Division (YCSD) is currently accepting applications for the Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI) Program and the Integrated Preschool Outreach Program (IPOP) for the 2014-2015 school year. Applications and information for both programs are available on the division website, at any YCSD elementary school, or at the York County School Board Office on Dare Road. |
Instructional Material ReviewPosted on: Wednesday, February 26, 2014The York County School Division is currently conducting an Instructional Material Review (IMR) process for K-5 Elementary Reading & Language Arts Instruction. All textbooks, teacher resources, student materials and electronic materials are reviewed and adopted through this process. Materials that correlate highly with the Virginia Standards of Learning, YSCD curriculum, and the Elementary Literacy Model were targeted for the review process. At this time, parents and community stakeholders are invited to review, and provide feedback, on the materials recommended for adoption. The parent preview day is scheduled for Thursday, March 6 from 12:30 to 5:00 p.m. and Friday, March 7 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the YCSD School Board Office. |
Tabb High School CyberPatriot Team Attends CNU Cybersecurity SymposiumPosted on: Friday, February 21, 2014The CyberPatriot team from Tabb High School's (THS) NJROTC unit attended the Symposium on Homeland Security & Defense at Christopher Newport University in February. The team had the privilege of listening to several keynote addresses dealing with cybersecurity given by an array of guest speakers including Samuel A. Nixon Jr., CIO of the Commonwealth of Virginia, Rear Admiral James B. Plehal (Ret.), former Commander of Naval Security Group Command, and Joseph M. Demanest, Jr., Assistant Director, Cyber Division, FBI. |

Teachers Blog to Share Instructional StrategiesPosted on: Friday, February 21, 2014Two Grafton Middle School (GMS) teachers shared ideas regarding effective instructional practices in recent blog posts. Jill Barnes’ blog post shares insight regarding the use of Web 2.0 tools such as Kidblog and the importance of authentic audiences for students’ writing. Chelsei Fox’s blog post explores the struggle between requiring versus inspiring the integration of instructional technology in classrooms. Blogging to share such powerful ideas is an excellent example of teacher leadership and both Jill and Chelsei represent the many strong teacher leaders in the York County School Division. |
SES Holds Opening Ceremony for the Winter OlympicsPosted on: Friday, February 21, 2014Seaford Elementary School (SES) is bringing Sochi to life for students during the 2014 Winter Olympics. Staff held their own opening ceremony and assigned each classroom at Seaford Elementary School a participating country. The students then began tracking medals won by “their” country while researching information about the country. Classes will select a small group of students to present information at the school’s Olympic Country Expo on Thursday, February 27. |
YCSD Student Art Contest WinnersPosted on: Friday, February 21, 2014The York County School Division (YCSD) honored the Winter 2014 Student Art Contest Winners during a reception in February. The contest is open to all YCSD students with winners being selected at the elementary and secondary levels. Emily Anania, a student at Yorktown Elementary School, was awarded the elementary prize for her artwork, while Grafton High School student Christina Tyndall earned the secondary prize. Both pieces of artwork join a permanent display of student artwork at the School Board Office. |
YCSD Students Place in Yorktown Women's Art ContestPosted on: Friday, February 21, 2014The York County School Division (YCSD) is pleased to announce the winners in the Yorktown Woman’s Club Art Competition. Artwork by Best in Show and First Place winners will be entered in the Tidewater District Women’s Clubs Art Show in March 2014. Winning artwork of the district show will be forwarded for competition at the Virginia Federation of Women’s Clubs Art Show in April 2014. Congratulations to all students who participated in the competition and a sincere thank you to the art teachers who encouraged students to share their artistic talents. |
All-Virginia Choir Winners for Tabb HighPosted on: Friday, February 14, 2014Students from across Virginia competed for All-Virginia Choir on Saturday, February 8. Tabb High School's (THS) Choral Department led by Choral Director, Mr. Gordon Parr, placed five students and two alternates in the prestigious state level choir. Representing THS in the All-Virginia Choir are Cullen Bowie, Sergio Constantiono, Paige Hartian, Aaron Lewis, and Hope Sears. Michael Dodd and Wendi Williams were named alternates. |
