GHS Students Finalists in Lexus Eco Challenge

Grafton High School’s Phineas and Ferns team was selected as one of the finalists in this year’s Lexus Eco Challenge. The team was one of only 16 winners in the “Air and Climate” challenge and was the only winning team from Virginia. The Lexus Eco Challenge is a nationwide educational program and contest that inspires and empowers young people to learn about the environment and take action to improve it. Lexus will award a total of $500,000 in grants and scholarships throughout this year’s program. Steven Meade, team sponsor and AP Environmental Science teacher at Grafton High School (GHS), won a $1,000 grant to buy lab equipment. The school will receive $2,000, and each team member won $1,400 in scholarship money.


Legislative Visit

Local state legislators headed back to school this week. Senator John Miller, Delegate Brenda Pogge and Delegate-Elect Monty Mason spent a morning visiting classrooms and talking to students and teachers at Magruder Elementary School (MES) as part of a statewide initiative to encourage elected officials to visit at least one school in their district each year. “Take Your Legislator to School” Month is coordinated annually by the Virginia School Board Association and the Governor.


YCSD National Board Certified Teachers

Six York County School Division (YCSD) teachers recently achieved National Board Certification. The National Board Certification process is a rigorous, voluntary endeavor, in which teachers demonstrate accomplished teaching via an extensive written portfolio (including student work, videotapes, analysis and reflection), as well as performance on six content-specific assessment exercises. YCSD teachers who have been designated National Board Certified Teachers for 2013 are: Heather Stark, Queens Lake Middle School; Annyce True, Grafton Bethel Elementary School; Desiree Lawson, Grafton Bethel Elementary School; Kimberly Clore, Grafton Bethel Elementary School; Karolyn Blackburn, Grafton Bethel Elementary School; Lindsey Cagle, Yorktown Elementary School.


Tabb Middle Girls Basketball Team Helps with Special Olympics

Members of the Tabb Middle School (TMS) Girls Basketball team recently had a fun and successful day helping with the Bocce championship at the Special Olympics in Virginia Beach. The girls will remember the day and they were great ambassadors for TMS and York County. The team was invited back to help again next year.

TMS Field Hockey Hosts Clinic at Mt. Vernon Elementary

Members of the Tabb Middle School (TMS) Field Hockey team recently hosted a field hockey skills clinic at Mt. Vernon Elementary School (MVES). The team provided instruction on stick and ball handling skills and children had the opportunity to practice what they learned.


Tabb High Cheerleaders "Stuff the Bus"

On Monday, December 2, members of the JV and Varsity Winter Season Cheerleading teams of Tabb High School (THS) visited Shaggy and Z104 at Peninsula Town Center in Hampton to donate over 35 items to Toys for Tots and the "Stuff the Bus" campaign. These toys will be distributed on Christmas morning to local children this year. The girls were able to spread their cheer over the radio waves with a 2-minute spot. They also sang the school fight song with Santa himself, as he was a 1979 THS graduate (Floyd Britt).


Jamestown Outreach Visits Seaford Elementary

Jamestown Outreach visited second grade students at Seaford Elementary School (SES) recently to talk about the Native American tribes that live in Virginia. Students in Mrs. Foret's second grade class enjoyed learning through hands on activities.


YRA Key Club Raises Funds

The York River Academy (YRA) Key Club, with 13 members, collected nearly $350 to support Trick or Treat for UNICEF this year. The primary focus for the fund raiser was to support vaccinations against tetanus for mothers and infants.
