GSST Team Selected as Finalist in NASA Challenge

Posted On: Friday, March 28, 2014

Congratulations to the Governor’s School for Science and Technology! The GSST Team, which includes three York County School Division students, has been selected as one of the top five finalists in the NASA Exploration Design Challenge (EDC)!

The goal of the Exploration Design Challenge is for students to research and design ways to protect astronauts from space radiation. NASA and Lockheed Martin are developing the Orion spacecraft that will carry astronauts beyond low Earth orbit and on to an asteroid or Mars. Protecting astronauts from radiation on these distant travels is an important -- and very real -- problem that needs solving.

As one of the top five finalist teams, the students will be assigned a NASA mentor at NASA Langley Research Center. Working with a Langley mentor and a Lockheed Martin engineer, the team’s design will be uploaded into a NASA simulation program called OTLARIS. The EDC team with the most significant reduction in radiation will be named the winner of the challenge. The final announcement will be made at the US Science and Engineering Festival in Washington, DC on April 25. For more information about the challenge is available here.
