Middle School Students Off to Mars!

Sixth grade science teachers, Tabbi Brownschidle (Yorktown Middle School) and Chelsei Fox (Grafton Middle School), were awarded a $5,000 Student Achievement Grant from the NEA Foundation for their Mars Colony Project. Students from both schools will collaborate as they design 22 modules, that when combined, would emulate the proposed Mars One settlement, which plans to take private citizens on a one-way trip to Mars in 2023. In this project, student teams will address food and air supply, energy production, water and sewage, resource acquisition, and recycling. This project requires students to not only master the science content, but also develops their skills in research, critical thinking, problem solving, and communication.


YHS All District Band Honors

Congratulations to the York High School (YHS) students selected for the 2014 All District Band. Symphonic Band selectees include: Cailin Chaloux (Piccolo - 1st Chair); Matthew Shih (Flute - 6th Chair); Christopher Dollesin (Alto Sax - 1st Chair); Ethan Buck (Trombone - 1st Chair); and David Brewster (Tuba - 1st Chair). Concert Band selectees include: Kevin Babu (Clarinet - 12th Chair); Bennett Keene (Bass Clarinet - 2nd Chair); and Elliott Miller (Alto Sax - 1st Chair). Cailin Chaloux, Christopher Dollesin, Ethan Buck and David Brewster also qualified to audition for the All Virginia Band.


GHS Student Actors Qualify for National Competition

Six Grafton High School (GHS) students have qualified to compete at the International Thespian Festival to be held at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in June! They each received an “Accomplished” rating at the state level. The GHS students earning the opportunity to compete in June are: Kylie Kraft for Stage Management; Anita Brown for Costume Design; Steven Clifton and Michael McGinnis for Duet Acting; Savannah Sanchez for Monologue; Karese Kaw-uh for Solo Musical. In addition, Savannah Sanchez, Michael McGinnis and Steven Clifton received the Critic’s Choice Award for being the judge’s favorites and were invited to perform on the Main Stage for the entire national conference! Only students from three schools in Virginia were invited to perform a Main Stage Show.


York County School Division 2014 Science Fair Winners Announced

The York County School Division (YCSD) is pleased to announce the winners in the York County School Division Science Fair. This year’s theme, “Solutions for Tomorrow” challenged students to ask new questions and investigate a wide range of topics. With 311 projects and more than 400 students entered into this year’s fair, it is the largest Science Fair ever held by the division. First, second, and third place winners are invited to apply to participate in the regional Tidewater Science Fair held at Old Dominion University on Saturday, March 15, 2014. Congratulations to all students who participated in the fair and a sincere thank you to the science teachers who encouraged and guided students throughout the scientific process.


Virtual Learning

The York County School Division (YCSD) held its second Codeathon 2.0 on Thursday, January 9 at York High School, with 100 students participating from YCSD middle and high schools. The Codeathon 2.0 provided students with a dynamic overview and hands-on experience that included programming and game design concepts. Presenters from Microsoft Corporation, Longwood University, Christopher Newport University, and Thomas Nelson Community College shared their expertise. Students learned about components, elements and software used to engineer games and apps and to showcase real-world applications.


THS Teacher and Student Present Findings at AFCEA Luncheon

Ms. Joyce Kuberek, Tabb High School (THS) chemistry teacher and the recipient of the Chapter's 2012-13 Teaching Tool Award, attended the Armed Forces Communications Electronics Association's (AFCEA) November luncheon along with one of her students, Nick Anselmo. They shared information about an AFCEA-funded STEM project that involved purchasing a weather balloon for students to learn how to launch, retrieve and perform data collection.


High School Student Art Show

It has become an annual tradition for Bruton High School (BHS) art students to enter their artwork in a juried competition hosted by This Century Art Gallery. This year, 20 students entered their artwork into the competition. The art is in display at This Century Art Gallery, located on North Boundary Street in Williamsburg, now through February 7.


YCSD Elementary Schools Honored

The Virginia Board of Education recently recognized Bethel Manor, Dare, Magruder, and Waller Mill elementary school as Title I Distinguished Schools. The awards are based on student achievement on state assessments during the 2011-2012 and 2010-2011 school years. Title I Distinguished schools are recognized for meeting all state and federal accountability requirements and achieving average reading and mathematics SOL scores at the 60th percentile or higher. Congratulations to these schools for earning this recognition.


Medford Named Board Chair

The County School Board of York County elected Mark A. Medford, District 3, to serve as the Board Chair during the annual organization meeting held on January 6 at York Hall. Robert W. George, District 5, was elected to serve as the Vice Chair.


First Graders Travel Around the World

First graders at Mt. Vernon Elementary School (MVES) traveled around the world with their "suitcases and passports" to study different holiday customs. Mrs. Jacobson's class visited Germany, where they made Tannenbaum hats and got candy in their shoes from St. Nicholas.
