Two YCSD Schools Listed Among Nations Best

Two York County School Division (YCSD) high schools made U.S. News and World Report’s annual list of the nation’s best high schools. The report, released this week, analyzed more than 31,000 public high schools and eventually considered 19,411 for possible ranking. Tabb High School (THS) made the list ranked 464th nationally and 20th in Virginia, while Grafton High School (GHS) is ranked 628th in the nation and 24th in Virginia. A three-step process was used to determine the final rankings. The first two steps used performance on state proficiency tests as the benchmarks. The third step assessed the degree to which schools prepare students for college-level work.


YRA Great Computer Challenge Teams

York River Academy (YRA) took two teams to Old Dominion University to participate in this year’s Great Computer Challenge (GCC). The teams were entered in two categories of competition: Video Editing and Desktop Presentations. Teams participating in GCC are only allowed to bring one computer and certain approved peripheral items. No outside resources can be used, and no internet access is allowed. Students have three hours to complete the challenge, using only their equipment, their computer skills, and their creative minds.


TMS Action for Animals

Tabb Middle School (TMS) students continue to work on a yearlong, school-wide endeavor that has culminated in student’s involvement with an international charity to protect elephants. In the fall, students researched animal abuse and presented projects focusing on various organizations and causes related to animal abuse. In December, a presentation on elephant poaching was selected as the common cause for the school this year. The TMS "Action for Animal Awareness" project has so far raised $800 to help support the fight against elephant poaching. TMS will donate the funds to the Space for Giants program, a wildlife conservation organization.


YCSD Students Chat with Hillary, Chelsea Clinton

Several Grafton High School (GHS) students and EXTEND students from each middle school were selected to participate in a live Skype conversation with Hillary Rodham Clinton and Chelsea Clinton. The York County School Division (YCSD) was one of just four locations in the nation chosen to participate in the No Ceilings: The Full Participation Project chat. The project looks at progress women and girls have made in the last 20 years. YCSD students had the opportunity to ask the Clintons questions and share their own stories. The students were selected after collaborating earlier this year to bring awareness of gender inequality in developing countries to the attention of the community. YCSD 2015 Teachers of the Year

The York County School Division (YCSD) is pleased to announce Mr. Doug Roper as the 2015 Teacher of the Year. Dr. Eric Williams, Division Superintendent, led a “prize patrol” to surprise the Tabb High School history teacher, the YCSD High School Teacher of the Year, in his classroom on school spirit day. A graduate of Elon College, Mr. Roper has spent 36 years educating students in York County. Reading Week Celebrations

The Mt. Vernon Elementary School (MVES) staff dressed up for a word definition to celebrate Reading Month. The fourth grade teachers selected the word "decade" with each teacher dressed as a different decade!


Tristan Gerth Named Young AFCEAN of the Month

Congratulations to Tabb Middle School (TMS) student Tristan Gerth who was named young AFCEAN (Tidewater Chapter) of the Month. He was treated to lunch and presented with a plaque at the AFCEA Luncheon held at the Langley Bayview Commonwealth Center on Wednesday, March 26, 2014.


SES Kindergarten Class Visits the Local Fire Station

Mrs. Elder's kindergarten class took a field trip from Seaford Elementary School (SES) to Fire Station 6 in Seaford recently. The students learned all about what firefighters do for our community. Students had the opportunity to get inside an ambulance, a fire truck and a fire rescue bus. They were also able to see where firefighters sleep, eat and learn. The firefighters also demonstrated what they would look and sound like in his or her equipment so the students would be more comfortable during an emergency.


YCSD Odyssey of the Mind Champions

Three York County School Division (YCSD) teams took First Place in the Peninsula Region Odyssey of the Mind competition on Saturday, March 29. In all, eight YCSD student teams placed in the top three in their respective categories and divisions.


TMS Students Read to TES Students

Every year, sixth and seventh graders from Tabb Middle School (TMS) visit Tabb Elementary School (TES) to read to the students as part of Read Across America. This year 89 students from TMS visited the TES classrooms. The sixth and seventh graders worked in groups of three or four to revise Readers Theater scripts to share with the elementary students. This event was part of York County School Division's initiative for Transformative Project Based Learning in which students publish their learning to others in the community.
