YCSD Teachers Summer Professional Development

Posted On: Friday, August 22, 2014

Four York County School Division teachers were selected to participate in the Virginia Center for Excellence in Teaching (VCET). Launched this summer at the George Mason University campus in Fairfax, this highly-selective professional development was divided into four innovative academies.

The free, six-day residential academies, funded through a Virginia Department of Education grant, focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM); interdisciplinary studies; fine arts; and the humanities and language arts. Among the 100 teachers invited to participate were:

  • Denise A. Fisher (Magruder/Waller Mill Elementary); STEM Academy
  • Patti Flanary (Waller Mill Elementary); Interdisciplinary Studies Academy
  • Monica Hyjek (Bruton High); Interdisciplinary Studies Academy
  • Marlene Riccio (Dare Elementary); Humanities & Language Arts Academy

“We had an excellent pool of applicants with more than 800 teachers who signed up from all across the state,” said Dr. Elizabeth Sturtevant, VCET director. “One of the goals of the program is to create networks of outstanding teachers who support each other and work together to improve public education in Virginia.”
