Dark Side of the Internet Parent Seminars

Posted on: Friday, January 09, 2015

Internet use has grown exponentially around the world, and teenagers are the primary producers and users of web and social media content. They share their ideas, thoughts and pictures with others online. The unfortunate reality, however, is that the Internet has also created an environment in which private information can, knowingly or unknowingly, end up in the wrong hands. The York County PTA and the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office are hosting Digital Safety parent seminars at four York County schools next month. These seminars are designed to help parents navigate the dilemmas presented by the digital world our kids inhabit. Each seminar will provide an overview of current digital threats to children.

As of 1 p.m., Wednesday, January 7, 2015, the division has made no decision to change school schedules for Thursday. EXTEND Students Explore Urban Development

Posted on: Friday, December 19, 2014

EXTEND students at all York County middle schools have been thinking as urban developers. Their goal is to determine how to adapt the current architecture and infrastructure of York County to meet the changing needs of our community. Students have looked at population cohort charts and land-use maps of the county, explored what other communities are doing to conserve natural resources and meet the needs of their current population, and come up with concepts to meet the needs of the predicted York County population in 2040. They began with a mental concept, turned it into a two-dimensional sketch, then a three dimensional model, and — ultimately — a written structure rationale. Lastly, students presented their projects to parents and staff.
