YCSD Advisory: Developing Weather ConditionsPosted on: Thursday, October 01, 2015The York County School Division is monitoring the developing weather conditions that are threatening the East Coast. Some schools have made adjustments to their after-school activities and programs based on weather and/or field conditions, and are communicating those changes to their school communities. If it appears that weather conditions will impact normal school operations, we will notify our staff and parents as soon as decisions are made. As a reminder, information regarding changes to school schedules (early dismissals, delayed openings or cancellations) will be announced via Connect 5 email and phone calls. Information is also posted on the division’s website, YCSD-TV, Facebook and Twitter accounts as well as on local television and radio stations. |
DES Kindergarteners Love Dot DayPosted on: Friday, September 18, 2015Story Kerr and Lindsey Blackmon, kindergarten teachers at Dare Elementary School (DES), used the story The Dot, by Peter Reynolds, to inspire creativity in their young students. They celebrated International Dot Day on September 15. After reading the story, students created a dot to leave their mark on the world. |
Science "Egg-cellence"Posted on: Friday, September 18, 2015How salty does water have to be before an egg floats? Fifth grade students at Seaford Elementary School got their hands wet this week while testing their theories regarding density. Students placed eggs in cups of water and, as expected, the eggs all sank to the bottom. They added one spoonful of salt at a time, increasing the density of the water, until the eggs floated to the top. |
NOAA B-WET GrantPosted on: Friday, September 18, 2015The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Chesapeake Bay Office has awarded the York County School Division $225,000 over three years to implement meaningful watershed educational experiences in secondary schools. Funding will be used to support professional development for teachers and field trips for students in grades 6 and 7 as well as biology and Earth Science courses. The first cohort of teachers participated in a training session this summer. Teachers received professional development in project design, scientific inquiry, and the use of field experiences as a learning tool. |
YCSD's Chopped FinalistPosted on: Friday, September 18, 2015Congratulations to Veronica Seguin, a Grafton High School and School of the Arts student, on her performance in the Food Network’s Chopped: Teen Tournament. Veronica, whose family recently moved to York County, competed against three other teenagers in the fourth episode of the tournament. She made it to the dessert round and was declared the winner of that round. Veronica is now headed to the Grand Finale to compete against three other finalists which will air on the Food Network next Tuesday at 10 p.m. |
2015 VSBA High School Video ContestPosted on: Friday, September 11, 2015The Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) is asking Virginia high school students to express their thoughts and ideas around the theme “Student Achievement: What Does It Look Like?” through their fourth annual student video contest. Students are invited to submit a 30 second video that conveys the contest theme. The top three videos, along with those identified by the judges as honorable mentions, will be posted on VSBA’s YouTube site, and winners will be announced at the VSBA Annual Convention. The submission deadline is October 1. |

Back to School SupportPosted on: Friday, September 11, 2015Dozens of students at Yorktown Elementary School started the new school year with brand new clothes and supplies courtesy of school partners and donations. The Mount Lebanon Baptist Church donated more than 100 back packs for children in need, while the YMCA Bright Beginnings Program arranged a shopping trip to Kohl’s for 40 students. Both the Mount Lebanon Baptist Church and the YMCA have provided assistance for children in the school for several years. |
