Science Teacher of the Year Award

The Langley Chapter of the Air Force Association and the Virginia Air & Space Center have chosen to honor two YCSD educators for their work in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Yorktown Elementary School teacher Barbara Westlund was selected as the 2014-15 Science Teacher of the Year in the K-8 category and York River Academy teacher Veronica Warwick was selected as the second runner-up in the Grade 9-12 category. The program aims to recognize classroom teachers for accomplishments and achievements in exciting K-12 students about STEM and preparing them to use and contribute to tomorrow’s technologies.

Tabb Middle Celebrates National Library Week

Tabb Middle School (TMS) hosted a Books, Board Games & Buttered Popcorn as an after school library activity. As part of the celebration for National Library Week, TMS students discussed their favorite books, played board games, and munched on popcorn. The TMS library media center also gave away 50 books to the first 50 students who checked out books this week in honor of National Library Week.


Yorktown Middle School Students Raise Money for Stop Hunger Now

All the students at Yorktown Middle School (YMS) read for pledges and donations during Read Across America and raised just over $3,692 for Stop Hunger Now, an organization that provides meals to undernourished people around the globe. As a reward for their generosity, Stop Hunger Now will bring their mobile packing operation to YMS in June. Selected eighth grade students as well as the top readers in grades 6 and 7 will have a hands-on opportunity to work in teams to package 10,000 meals in 2-3 hours. Students will set up and take down packaging stations and equipment, fill bins with raw ingredients, scoop ingredients into meal bags, weigh and seal the bags, box and stack them on pallets, and load the pallets and equipment onto a truck.


Little Library Construction at SES

York County residents looking for a good read will soon be able to select books from one of several miniature libraries in the community. Third grade students at Seaford Elementary School (SES), with the help of students from New Horizons Regional Education Center and volunteers from Wayne Harbin Builders, Kitchen Designs, and parents designed and built “little free libraries.” Materials were donated by community businesses including Kempsville Building Supply, Wayne Harbin Builders, Design Tech Inc. and the SES PTA. Each structure will initially be filled with a variety of books collected, recommended and even written by first, second and third grade SES students. Once the little libraries are installed in locations across the county, community members are welcome to take a book to read


YCSD Teachers of the Year Finalists Announced

York County School Division (YCSD) administrators and members of the York Foundation for Public Education shared exciting news with three teachers as they announced the finalists for the YCSD Teacher of the Year. The Teacher of the Year prize patrol, sponsored by TowneBank, included Superintendent Victor Shandor, Chief Academic Officer Stephanie Guy, Education Foundation Liaison Peggy Myatt, and Education Foundation board member and Vice President of TowneBank Sandra Allen. The group surprised each of the teachers: Kathryn Burr, Tabb Elementary School; Andrea Mouton, Grafton Middle School; and Tori Otstot, Bruton High School.


Risk Watch at SES

Annetta Norwood, the county’s Fire and Life Safety Educator, spoke to second grade classes at Seaford Elementary School (SES) each week in March. As a culminating activity, York County firefighters brought fire engines and other apparatus to the school.


YCSD Programs Featured in State Directory

The Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) has released its 19th annual VSBA Showcases for Success directory, highlighting successful K-12 programs in Virginia’s public schools. The York County School Division is one of 58 school divisions from across the Commonwealth that has programs featured in the directory highlighting programs that emphasize Virtual/Blended Learning and/or Career & Technical Education. One of the YCSD programs highlighted is the Grafton High School (GHS) partnership with NASA to participate in HUNCH (High Schools United with NASA to Create Hardware), an innovative program that involves students fabricating real-world products for NASA as they apply their science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills, as well as learning to work in teams and think creativ


Local Author Visits Seaford Elementary

Seaford resident and local author, Chad Green, visited Seaford Elementary School to read a portion of his novel to fifth grade students during Read Across America month. Mr. Green also took time to share his experience and process of writing and publishing his book. Students were able to ask questions, and the class received a copy of his book.


YHS Yearbook Earns Recognition

The York High School yearbook has been recognized for yearbook excellence and is featured in the 2015 Jostens Look Book. The Jostens Look Book is a collection of spreads and photos from outstanding yearbooks from around the country. The yearbook was selected from approximately 3,000 that were entered for consideration. The 2015 panel of judges, comprised of nationally recognized scholastic journalism professionals and award-winning yearbook advisers, selected the best examples of yearbook spreads and covers to make up the 344-page 2015 Look Book. Congratulations to Ashley Via and her students!
