Students in all grades were invited to select a character from a book and create a pumpkin that looks like that character. They worked with their families and brought them from home to create the best pumpkin patch in York County! |
Anti-Bullying Month CelebrationPosted on: Friday, October 30, 2015Dare Elementary School (DES) ended a month of anti-bullying activities with a special Green Zone ceremony for the entire student body on Friday, October 30. The Green Zone is a school wide coaching program created by the National Center for the Prevention of Community Violence (NCPCV), a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing violence by providing community based resources for all ages. The Green Zone provides school-wide language for all to use when appropriate behaviors are being shown and when they are not. Principal Lindsey Caccavale introduced the school’s first Green Zone ambassadors, students who help mentor and support their fellow students. Students then planted red tulips in the front of the school for Anti-Bullying Awareness Month. |
Benefits of Butterfly GardensPosted on: Friday, October 30, 2015Butterfly gardens aren’t just a part of the landscaping on York County School Division campuses, their primary purpose is to serve as a teaching tool. Students at Bethel Manor Elementary School have been learning about Monarch butterflies and the development cycles of butterflies since the beginning of the school year. Once the caterpillars become butterflies, students and staff tag them and release them. |

Breakfast in the ClassroomPosted on: Friday, October 23, 2015Walk through a York County School Division elementary school at the start of the school day and you will likely see students with both books and breakfast at their desk. Four schools have already adopted a new strategy, breakfast in the classroom, to help make sure students have the opportunity to fuel their brains with the most important meal of the day. In the coming weeks, four additional elementary schools will implement the program. To date, all participating schools have seen more than a 100% increase in daily breakfast participation rates at their schools. Teachers have also shared that the program is very successful in ensuring that more students have access to a healthy breakfast while also reducing the morning rush. |
