Tabb Middle School’s First Lego League Grand Champions

Posted On: Friday, November 13, 2015

The Virginia/D.C. FIRST LEGO League Regional Qualifying Tournament was held at Crittenden Middle School in Newport News on November 7. Tabb Middle School’s Team, Tigers AI, placed first as Overall Division 2 Champions and will represent the region in the state tournament at James Madison University in December.

FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is an international robotics program that ignites an enthusiasm for discovery, science, and technology in kids ages 9 to 14 through real-world challenges. This year’s theme was Trash Trek. FLL Teams had to identify a problem with the way we handle or make trash. The Tabb Middle School Team, Tigers AI, researched and planned for two months to develop the solution of improving the methods and means of recycling at Tabb Middle School. Students also had to build and program an autonomous Lego Mindstorms robot, they named AlphaBot Disintegrator, using engineering concepts to perform tasks related to Trash Disposal and Recycling in a model Lego world. As they prepare for the State tournament, they plan to expand their recycling outreach efforts and improve on their Robot Mission Challenges.
