Breakfast in the Classroom

Posted On: Friday, October 23, 2015

Walk through a York County School Division elementary school at the start of the school day and you will likely see students with both books and breakfast at their desk. Four schools have already adopted a new strategy, breakfast in the classroom, to help make sure students have the opportunity to fuel their brains with the most important meal of the day.

In the coming weeks, four additional elementary schools will implement the program. To date, all participating schools have seen more than a 100% increase in daily breakfast participation rates at their schools. Teachers have also shared that the program is very successful in ensuring that more students have access to a healthy breakfast while also reducing the morning rush.

Breakfast in the Classroom is a state-wide initiative to address childhood hunger across the Commonwealth of Virginia. Led by the first lady of Virginia, Dorothy McAuliffe, and supported by the Virginia Department of Education, the program aligns with the Hungry Kids Act.
