BHS Football Players Give Back

Bruton High School (BHS) football players tackled one more goal before starting this long holiday weekend. Members of the team took part in the Feed the Community day at New Zion Baptist Church in Williamsburg on Wednesday, November 25. This is the third year the student athletes have volunteered with the program.


BMES Named National Title I Distinguished School

The Virginia Department of Education has named Bethel Manor Elementary School (BMES) a National Title I Distinguished School. Only 100 schools throughout the country (two per state) are recognized with this honor each year. A project of the National Title I Association, the National Title I Distinguished Schools Program publicly recognizes qualifying Title I schools for the outstanding academic achievements of their students. It highlights the efforts of schools across the country making significant improvements for their students.


SES Kindergartners Honor Veterans

Kindergarten students from Seaford Elementary School (SES) recently went to Colonial Harbor to honor the veterans who live there. Prior to the visit, students learned about the significance of Veterans Day and wrote cards to veterans. They also created red, white and blue placemats in art class and learned two patriotic songs to perform.


DES 2015 Reflections Winners

Dare Elementary School (DES) has announced the student winners in this year’s PTA Reflections competition, which had the theme “Let Your Imagination Fly.” Of the 13 submissions, five 1st place winners will go on to compete at the York County level, and then potentially the district, state, and national levels.


WMES Harvest Dance

Waller Mill Elementary School (WMES) has begun what they intend to hold as an annual school event now, a Harvest Dance. Students demonstrated dances they learned in their dance and music classes and invited their parents to join in some as well. They brought canned foods to donate and went home with lots of smiles and memories.

Congratulations to York River Academy teacher, Veronica Warwick, and York High School teacher, Alicia Dobyns, for their selection as Master Teachers for the Virginia Space Coast Scholars program! Master teachers facilitate online courses for 10th grade students to learn more about NASA’s earth and airborne orbital and suborbital missions that are conducted or launched from Virginia’s Space Coast.


Yorktown Middle French Students Meet French Pen Pals

On Tuesday, October 20, Madame Kaufmann-Perry's French 1 and 2 students met their French pen pals from the French American School of Norfolk, Virginia. The native French students presented a PowerPoint to explain their perspective regarding the victory at Yorktown or Yorktown Day. YMS French 1 students introduced themselves in French. French 2 students did the same, but also asked two questions about the visitors, two about Yorktown Day, and one about a topic of their choice. Students selected a yearlong pen pal to exchange ‘slow’ mail letters, as well as communicate via a blog created by Monsieur Gregory, the French teacher of the French American School of Norfolk. BMES Recognizes Bethel Manor Fire Department

Members of Bethel Manor Elementary School's (BMES) fifth grade safety patrol team met with the Bethel Manor Fire Department to express our appreciation for all the help they provide our school and the Bethel Manor community. Classrooms throughout the school created wonderful posters, cards and letters expressing our appreciation. Three student representatives from the safety patrol thanked them for their service, keeping the neighborhood safe, teaching our students about fire safety, and assisting our school with fire and intruder drills. Other members of the safety patrol presented them with the posters and a small treat!


Superintendent Named Darden Fellow

York County School Division Superintendent Victor Shandor, Ed.D., has been named a 2015 Darden College of Education Fellow at Old Dominion University. The Darden Fellows program honors one graduate each from the education college's various departments. Dr. Shandor was nominated by the department of Communication Disorders and Special Education. This year’s six honorees will be recognized at a luncheon in December.
