Future Chefs Competition

Posted On: Friday, April 01, 2016

Students from each elementary school in the division took over the kitchen at York High School on March 31 for the Sodexo Future Chefs Culinary Competition. The national initiative, which is in its sixth year, was launched to get students thinking about making healthy food choices while also encouraging them to get active and creative in the kitchen.

The cooking challenge began with 250 YCSD elementary students submitting healthy breakfast recipes. Ten students were then selected to participate in the division final event. With the help of cafeteria managers, the students prepared their recipes for a panel of judges that included School Board members Barbara Haywood, Page Minter, and Mark Medford, as well as Division Superintendent Victor Shandor and Chief Operations Officer Carl James. Judges considered taste, texture, presentation, and use of featured ingredients.

Sanai Conley, a fifth grade student at Yorktown Elementary School (YES), created a breakfast banana split recipe featuring fruit and Greek yogurt, which earned the top prize. She will now be considered for regional finalist awards, and the selected regional finalists will vie to become one of five national finalists.
