The associate director for K-12 academicservices provides leadership for division testing, gifted, limited English proficiency, and educational technology programs as well as professional development programs for all licensed employees. Dr. Cagle has been an educator for nearly 20 years, with eight years of administrative experience within the York County School Division. She served as an assistant principal at Yorktown Middle School and principal of Grafton Middle School for the last four years. A graduate of Francis Marion University, she earned her master’s degree from Walden University |
10 YCSD Schools Earn VIP DistinctionPosted on: Friday, May 27, 2016Governor Terry McAuliffe and the Virginia Board of Education announced that ten York County School Division (YCSD) schools earned 2016 Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) awards for advanced learning and achievement. Mt. Vernon and Waller Mill elementary schools were among only 104 schools in the state to earn the Board of Education Excellence Award. Bethel Manor, Coventry, Magruder, Seaford and Tabb elementary schools, along with Grafton, Tabb and York high schools were among the 166 schools in the state to earn the Distinguished Achievement Award. The VIP award program recognizes schools and divisions that exceed minimum state and federal accountability standards and achieve excellence goals established by the governor and the board. |
New BMES Principal AppointedPosted on: Friday, May 13, 2016The York County School Division is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. David Reitz as the next principal of Bethel Manor Elementary School. The School Board approved the appointment after an extensive search process that included focus groups comprised of faculty, staff and parents, stakeholder surveys, and three rounds of interviews. Dr. Reitz is currently the principal of Booker T. Washington Elementary School in Suffolk, where he has served the last three years. He is also a past Teacher of the Year for Virginia Beach and Portsmouth school divisions; as well as the Assistant Principal of the Year for Virginia Beach City Public Schools, where he served two schools with a high military family presence. The Superintendent’s Award recognizes employees who have made a particularly meaningful contribution to furthering the school division’s mission statement. Savina Booth, a Grafton High School special education para-educator, brings passion, creativity and commitment to her job each and every day. In addition to providing the traditional one-on-one support for students in her classroom, she researches, plans and creates solutions for these students to achieve what some may deem impossible. Greg Dolak, associate director of Maintenance and Facilities Support, was honored with the Spirit of Education Award. Vernon Elementary School (MVES), and the YCSD Elementary Level Teacher of the Year has been named this year's Virginia Air & Space Center Science Teacher of the Year. The program, co-sponsored with the Langley chapter of the AFA, recognizes classroom teachers for their accomplishments and achievements in exciting K-12 students about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and preparing them to use and contribute to tomorrow’s technologies. |
Yorktown Elementary School Magnet NightPosted on: Friday, May 06, 2016More than 200 students and parents attended Yorktown Elementary School’s annual Math, Science, & Technology Magnet Night this month. Participants included the Virginia Institute for Marine Science (VIMS), Mad Science, physics experts from the College of William and Mary, and Bayport Credit Union. The organizations shared exhibits and activities designed for each grade level to increase understanding and enthusiasm in the fields of math, science, and technology, as well as improve critical thinking and collaboration skills. Students in second and third grades were tasked with Cookie Mining to remove all of the chocolate chips from a cookie without damaging them. |
TMS Student Wins National CompetitionPosted on: Friday, May 06, 2016Tabb Middle School (TMS) seventh grader, Abby Vedock-Gross, was the first place winner in the 2016 Young Reporters for the Environment USA (YRE) competition for the video category in the 13-15 age category. Abby is enrolled in the Extend program at TMS and completed this project as part of a human geography unit. Each student was challenged to research one of three topics: deforestation, water scarcity, or community health and to suggest sustainable change solutions in their chosen topic. YRE Young Reporters for the Environment is an international program that engages youth in environmental journalism in more than 25 countries around the world. First place winners in the national competition also proceeded to the international competition. |
Student Art ContestPosted on: Friday, April 22, 2016Local School Board members were treated to an impressive display of creativity and faced some tough decisions in selecting the 2016 winners of the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) Regional Art Contest on April 12. Student art from the elementary, middle and high school levels represented each school division in the competition, which was judged at the regional forum for area school board members. Art created by Ashraf Abdul-Alim from Grafton High School earned second place among the high school entries from Region II, which encompasses 16 school divisions. The VSBA Regional Art Contest was started in 1989 to promote the artistic talents of Virginia's public school students. |
WMES Plants Truffula Trees for Read Across AmericaPosted on: Friday, April 22, 2016The Waller Mill Elementary School (WMES) resource team recently dressed up as truffula trees from The Lorax by Dr. Seuss for the Character Book Parade. Students dressed as characters from their favorite book and the Bruton High School band came to help celebrate Read Across America! |
