Vernon Elementary School (MVES), and the YCSD Elementary Level Teacher of the Year has been named this year's Virginia Air & Space Center Science Teacher of the Year. The program, co-sponsored with the Langley chapter of the AFA, recognizes classroom teachers for their accomplishments and achievements in exciting K-12 students about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and preparing them to use and contribute to tomorrow’s technologies. |
Yorktown Elementary School Magnet NightPosted on: Friday, May 06, 2016More than 200 students and parents attended Yorktown Elementary School’s annual Math, Science, & Technology Magnet Night this month. Participants included the Virginia Institute for Marine Science (VIMS), Mad Science, physics experts from the College of William and Mary, and Bayport Credit Union. The organizations shared exhibits and activities designed for each grade level to increase understanding and enthusiasm in the fields of math, science, and technology, as well as improve critical thinking and collaboration skills. Students in second and third grades were tasked with Cookie Mining to remove all of the chocolate chips from a cookie without damaging them. |
TMS Student Wins National CompetitionPosted on: Friday, May 06, 2016Tabb Middle School (TMS) seventh grader, Abby Vedock-Gross, was the first place winner in the 2016 Young Reporters for the Environment USA (YRE) competition for the video category in the 13-15 age category. Abby is enrolled in the Extend program at TMS and completed this project as part of a human geography unit. Each student was challenged to research one of three topics: deforestation, water scarcity, or community health and to suggest sustainable change solutions in their chosen topic. YRE Young Reporters for the Environment is an international program that engages youth in environmental journalism in more than 25 countries around the world. First place winners in the national competition also proceeded to the international competition. |
Student Art ContestPosted on: Friday, April 22, 2016Local School Board members were treated to an impressive display of creativity and faced some tough decisions in selecting the 2016 winners of the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) Regional Art Contest on April 12. Student art from the elementary, middle and high school levels represented each school division in the competition, which was judged at the regional forum for area school board members. Art created by Ashraf Abdul-Alim from Grafton High School earned second place among the high school entries from Region II, which encompasses 16 school divisions. The VSBA Regional Art Contest was started in 1989 to promote the artistic talents of Virginia's public school students. |

Students dressed as characters from their favorite book and the Bruton High School band came to help celebrate Read Across America! |
GBES Teacher Honored By State OrganizationPosted on: Friday, April 22, 2016Carol Bauer, who teaches fourth grade at Grafton Bethel Elementary School, has been named the recipient of the 2016 Virginia Education Association (VEA) Award for Teaching Excellence. The award, the highest offered by the VEA, recognizes educators whose professional practice and advocacy for the profession are exemplary. Carol joined YCSD in 1996 and was named the Grafton Bethel Elementary School Teacher of the Year in 2015. In addition to challenging her students on a daily basis, she serves as sponsor forthe Battle of Book and coach of the Great Grizzlies Lego team. She has helped mentor fellow teachers through the rigorous National Board Certification process. GMS 1,000 Book ChallengePosted on: Friday, April 22, 2016Reading Specialist Heather Stark challenged the students and staff at Grafton Middle School (GMS) to read 1,000 books for Read Across America. GMS readily accepted the challenge and collectively exceeded their goal in just eight weeks. For every book read, students filled out a book form, which was then placed on the Cat in the Hat display in the school's atrium. Students could then track their progress over the weeks and be challenged to keep reading. |
YCSD Ranked Best in Teacher SupportPosted on: Friday, April 22, 2016The York County School Division has been ranked as one of the best school systems for teacher support in Virginia. Teacher.org ranked school districts in Virginia, and across the country, that excel in supporting teachers inside and outside of the classroom. Of the 130 Virginia school divisions analyzed, YCSD ranked 16th. School divisions were assessed on several factors, which represent how well a school district supports their teachers. Some criteria included: class size, administrator and support staff availability, and student proficiency levels. |
SES Shows Student SupportPosted on: Friday, April 22, 2016The entire Seaford Elementary School (SES) student body and staff donned special t-shirts to show support for a fellow student suffering from cancer. Wes Pak, a fourth grade student at SES, was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma in 2011 and is now battling the disease for the fourth time. As a result of his diagnosis, Jedi Wes (as his family calls him) travels to New York frequently for treatment, missing school and school activities. The school does so much to keep Wes involved and a part of their community – from supporting his special Toy Drive for CHKD to assisting in fundraising events. This particular event was inspired by and realized thanks to an SES parent, Lauren Blanchard, who started a non-profit called Got CUREage. Elizabeth was one of three finalists for the honor and was surprised with the news at a special faculty meeting by the Teacher of the Year prize patrol.
