Coventry Elementary School FundraiserPosted on: Friday, November 18, 2016Coventry Elementary School (CES) held a fundraiser at Papa Murphy's Take 'N' Bake in Yorktown. Teachers Amy Hall, Amber McCarthy and Principal Paula Sasin volunteered their time and prepared pizzas for customers during this event. They provided service with a smile. Coventry wants to thank the customers that called in and mentioned their school to help raise money and especially Papa Murphy's for their community support. |
Bethel Manor Elementary School Celebrates VeteransPosted on: Friday, November 18, 2016Students in Courtney Brightbill’s second grade classroom at Bethel Manor Elementary School (BMES) found a “heartfelt” way to thank local veterans in honor of Veterans Day. Students decorated hearts in red, white and blue and wrote thank you messages on the back of each drawing. The drawings and messages were then strung together to create a personalized banner which was donated to the VA hospital to show the students’ gratitude. |
Bring Your Legislator to SchoolPosted on: Friday, November 18, 2016Three representatives from the Virginia General Assembly headed back to school, as building principals, in November. Senator Mamie Locke and Delegates Gordon Helsel and Brenda Pogge were among the 15 participants in the division’s Principal for a Day program who jumped right in to their new duties as principals. They even had the opportunity to help teach in some classrooms by sharing information about the General Assembly as well as election and legislative processes. Guest principals began their day with duties such as helping with student drop-off lines and sharing the morning announcements. Activities then ranged from classroom visits to student and staff meetings - some guest principals even helped run fire drills and awards celebrations. |

Dads at Bethel Manor Elementary School volunteer during classroom lessons, resource, lunch, recess. Sometimes they even serve as helping hand to the custodial staff. Tabb Middle School FIRSTLego League Claims Regional TitlePosted on: Friday, November 11, 2016Several York County School Division schools took part in Newport News Regional FIRSTLegoLeague Competition this month. The Tabb Middle School (TMS) team placed first in its division, whilethe Grafton Bethel Elementary School team placed second overall in its division. Both teams secured a trip to the state competition in December. The Seaford Elementary School Bulldogs teamearned the Judges’ Award in its division. Throughout the process, team members learned the importance of perseverance as theyused the engineering design process to improve the robots. Theteams honed their research skills and used their knowledge of the scientific method to identify a problem and develop a solution related to the competition theme, Animal Allies. |
Model Water Tower CompetitionPosted on: Friday, November 11, 2016Three Queens Lake Middle School (QLMS) students recently entered a model water tower competition at Old Dominion University sponsored by the American Water Works Association. The challenge was to build a water tower within certain design parameters and they were graded in the following categories: structural integrity, cost efficiency, and design ingenuity. The QLMS sixth grade students, Julia Shrieves, Dakota Anderson and Kathleen Richardson, took third place out of 16 teams. The third place prize was a $100 check for their school, which the students were excited to present to Principal Scott Meadows. |
Grafton Bethel Elementary School Takes On Harwood MillPosted on: Friday, October 28, 2016Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES) fourth graders enjoyed a field trip to Harwood Mills Reservoir. Each pavilion was transformed into an outdoor classroom to create engaging learning experiences for the students such as a nature walk/scavenger hunt and an erosion/watershed activity. Students also created an iMovie on environmental topics and took row boats onto the reservoir to collect water samples and study what they found. |
Magruder Elementary School Girls Coding ClubPosted on: Friday, October 28, 2016Magruder Elementary School (MES) began hosting an afterschool Girls Coding Club in October. Girls from each fifth grade class have the opportunity to become “resident experts” about computer coding with Sketch and coding controlled robots. These young ladies will then be the coding assistants as the school's education technology facilitator (ETF) brings coding opportunities into each of their fifth grade classrooms during second semester. We are looking forward to seeing all the ideas they design in club and in the years to come! |
