Tabb Middle School FIRSTLego League Claims Regional Title

Several York County School Division schools took part in Newport News Regional FIRSTLego League Competition this month. The Tabb Middle School (TMS) team placed first in its division, while the Grafton Bethel Elementary School team placed second overall in its division. Both teams secured a trip to the state competition in December. The Seaford Elementary School Bulldogs team earned the Judges' Award in its division.

Throughout the process, team members learned the importance of perseverance as they used the engineering design process to improve the robots. The teams honed their research skills and used their knowledge of the scientific method to identify a problem and develop a solution related to the competition theme, Animal Allies.

After talking with researchers from Cornell Lab of Ornithology and other regional contacts, the TMS team developed a prototype solution for the problem of unsanitary hummingbird feeders. Presenting their robot and their research at the state tournament will further develop important skills of leadership, responsibility, teamwork, performance under stress, and self-confidence.
