U.S. News & World Report released it’s ranking of the Best High Schools in Virginia for 2023-24 and our schools outperformed the majority of high schools in the state. The Gloucester County School Board has named Tony Vladu, Ed.D., York County School Division’s chief human resources officer (CHRO), as the new superintendent of Gloucester County Public Schools, beginning August 1.


Bingo for Books

Bingo, books, and bringing families and the community together is what the Bingo for Books elementary family engagement event was all about on July 12 at the Yorktown Library. With over 100 guests in attendance, YCSD students and families adorned their bingo cards with colorful dots and when an enthusiastic "BINGO!" was called, the winning student received a free book of choice.


Library of Virginia Contest Winner

The Library of Virginia and Dominion Energy recognized winners of the Strong Men & Women in History student essay contest last week. Students across Virginia shared about the importance of recognizing and celebrating American history: highlighting hidden stories in their community which have been forgotten and how they can be remembered and shared for future generations. Congratulations to GHS’s own Alexa Koeckritz!


KidWind National Champions

Tabb High School students recently returned from Boulder, Colorado celebrating their accomplishments at the National KidWind Challenge. The THS Windbreakers (Dante Keil, Claire Chang, Joshua Namkoong, Gavin Bowden, Matthew Andrews, and Shugo Mori) was named this year’s National Champions in the High School Age Division (grades 9-12). If the team and students’ names sound familiar – that’s because they won last year’s competition as well! Tabb’s “Gone with the Wind” Team (Kyle Ray, Alice Fang, Katelyn Wiltz and Jacoby Melton) won the Kidwind/Trane Data Analytic G.O.A.T. Award from Trane Industries.


State Board of Education Recognizes YCSD

The Virginia Board of Education has announced the 2022-23 Exemplar Performance Awards recognizing schools or school divisions that exceed board-established requirements or show continuous improvement on academic and school quality indicators and (ii) schools, school divisions, and school boards that implement effective, innovative practices. The awards are based on performance and practice during the 2021-22 school year.

VDOE K-12 Learning Acceleration Grants

Virginia families can now apply for funds from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to help support the costs of tutoring and other similar services. K-12 Learning Acceleration grants of $1,500 are available to families of any public, private, parochial or home-school student in grades K-12 residing in Virginia, while qualifying families are eligible for $3,000.


NHREC BUILD Hampton Roads Career Selection Day

More than 20 YCSD high school seniors were recognized as future ready graduates during the sixth annual New Horizons Regional Education Centers’ (NHREC) BUILD Hampton Roads Career Selection Day ceremony this week. The event, modeled after the NCAA’s National Signing Day for athletes committing to play sports in college, celebrates students entering the automotive, construction, advanced manufacturing and information/cybersecurity workforce directly after high school. Through their specialized career and technical training at NHREC, these graduating seniors have the opportunity to gain full-time employment with Hampton Roads employers in high demand and high wage-earning entry-level positions earning on average between $18 to $28 per hour plus full employer benefits. This year, 110 students from the six school divisions in the greater peninsula area signed on with 23 regional employers! Congratulations to all the students on their next steps!


VDOE Superintendent of Public Instruction Visits YCSD School

Dr. Lisa Coons, VDOE Superintendent of Public Instruction, visited classrooms at Magruder Elementary School this morning to kick of Teacher Appreciation Week. She had the opportunity to observe – and participate - as students took part in small group instruction, writing lessons, and STEM instruction in the school’s Makerspace. What better way to start your Monday then working with children?
