Patriot's Pen Essay Winners

Each year more than 125,000 students in grades 6-8 enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest nationwide. This year, three Tabb Middle students won all three awards at our local level. Congratulations to first place winner, Jacob Grieme; second place winner, Jatin Tiwari; and third place winner, Sinaya Hairston. The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting an essay expressing their views based on a patriotic theme. Each entry was carefully evaluated by a team of VFW Post 824 members and was considered for criteria such as theme knowledge, theme development, and clarity of ideas.

Calendar Development Update

The School Board received a brief update on the development of school calendars at Monday night’s work session. Dr. Shandor informed board members that the YCSD calendar committee will develop a 2020-21 calendar with a start date of Tuesday, September 8, 2020 (the day after Labor Day). This decision was made in agreement with other regional school divisions, after determining that more time is needed to thoroughly review, and address, the stakeholder feedback provided through surveys conducted in September. Throughout this school year, both the YCSD and regional calendar committees will use the survey feedback to develop proposals for the 2021-22 school year that will include options for a pre-Labor Day start.

New College Readiness Program

This morning, the York County School Division and Langley Air Force Base announced a new partnership with an evidence-based, rigorous national STEM instruction program. The partnership is funded through a grant from the US. Department of Defense, worth up to $592,000, to provide a two-year College Readiness Program from the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI). This College Readiness Program will be offered at Grafton and York high schools initially and will provide comprehensive, content-specific training, mentoring, instructional materials, and ready-to-use classroom and lab materials for teachers, as well as expert-led study sessions, materials, supplies and mock assessments for students. The purpose of the grant is to increase the number of students taking and excelling in college-level math, science, and English classes. Tabb High School Tragedy

The York County School Division is grateful for the outpouring of support in wake of this weekend’s tragedy. The loss of these three young men is not only affecting the Tabb High family, but students, staff and community members across our division and county. Through last night’s vigil, a student gathering at Tabb High this morning, and multiple tributes on social media, the compassion and love from our county and our surrounding communities is heartwarming. As we cope with this loss together, please keep the families of these young men and the entire Tabb family in your thoughts. Let them know that York County stands united with Tabb High.

YCSD Schools Earn Virginia Purple Star Designation

The number of York County schools recognized for their commitment to serving military children and their families continues to grow. This week, Bethel Manor Elementary, Tabb Elementary, Waller Mill Elementary, Yorktown Elementary, Grafton Middle, and Bruton High received the Purple Star designation from the Virginia Department of Education, bringing the total number of YCSD schools earning this designation to 10. The Purple Star award honors schools that demonstrate a commitment to meeting military families’ needs while also providing resources and programming related to transitions and academic planning. Virginia is home to several of the largest and most important military installations in the country and approximately 32% of all YCSD students have at least one parent serving in the military.

Seaford Elementary Student Service Award Recipient

Each school year, the School Board recognizes students across the division as student service award recipients. This month's elementary honoree stole the show at the September board meeting. Seaford Elementary School's Quinn Olivo has dedicated his life to advocating for the rights of other and promoting awareness of Down Syndrome. Quinn’s advocacy and awareness activities include being a team captain for the annual Down Syndrome Association of Hampton Roads (DSAHR) fund raising event and DSAHR representative for the Hampton Roads Show and holiday parades; leading classroom activities each year for World Down Syndrome Day Awareness; runway model for Down Syndrome Association of Greater Richmond; and Virginia Beach Story Exchange mode. Quinn also served as a self-advocate guest at Eastern Virginia Medical School Grand Rounds and Old Dominion University Department of Special Education. PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test Semi-Finalists

More than 1.5 million high school students took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMQT) in 2019 and today the 16,000 national semi-finalists were named. Four YCSD students are among those recognized! Join us in shouting a HUGE congratulations to Nathan Geng (GHS), Annie Liang (YHS), Nicholas Gu and Maria Stuebner (THS)! These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be offered next spring.

YCSD Schools & Offices Closed - Sept. 6

All YCSD after-school and evening activities, including athletics, are canceled today, Thursday, September 5. All schools and offices will be closed Friday, September 6, with all Friday and weekend activities also canceled. Essential personnel will be notified of work schedules by their supervisors.

2019 Outstanding STEM Award Recipients

Congratulations to Barbara Westlund on being named the STEM Conductor, which is given to a Virginia educator who has created enriching experiences that inspire the next generation of STEM enthusiasts.

YCSD SOL Pass Rates

The Virginia Department of Education released the 2018-19 Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) pass rates today. The results indicate students in the York County School Division continue to exceed state averages in the five content areas tested. "We are proud of the successes our students and teachers achieve year after year, said Dr. Stephanie Guy, chief academic officer. "Most notably gains made division-wide in math, both overall and within each student subgroup, demonstrate our commitment to continuous improvement." The division experienced gains in mathematics and science, exceeding the state averages in those areas by 10 and 9 percentage points respectively. The growth in mathematics can be attributed to several factors - the development of a K-12 math model aligned to the revised state standards, an investment in manipulatives for grades K-8, and the addition of two math coaches who provided ongoing support and training.
