COVID-19 Update

As Dr. Shandor shared in his email on January 1, the division remains confident in the effectiveness of mitigation strategies in place in our schools. However, as expected, community transmission rates are affecting both staff and student attendance rates.

While the division believes students benefit most from in-person learning and belong in schools, these attendance rates are not sustainable. During Tuesday’s school closures, our staff worked to prepare for potential shifts to virtual learning. While we have not yet shifted any classes or schools, if we continue to experience the same level or higher absentee rates, we will be forced to adjust course.

To reiterate, the division has not made a decision to shift any classes or schools to virtual at this time, but every family should have a plan in place to support learning at home. We will continue to monitor our status daily and communicate any operating schedule changes to families if, and when, any changes become necessary.

Driver Education Standards of Learning

The state’s proposed 2022 Driver Education Standards of Learning for Virginia Public Schools have been refined through feedback from parents, teachers, administrators and representatives from higher education. These standards define the skills and competencies necessary to become a proficient user of the highway transportation system.

Before final review and adoption, the Virginia Board of Education is accepting public comments regarding the 2022 Driver Education Standards of Learning through January 31, 2022. The 2022 Driver Education Standards of Learning can be accessed at the Driver Education Standards of Learning webpage. Public comments can be received at vdoe.stem@doe.virginia.gov.

Data Science Standards of Learning

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) has proposed a new course called Data Science, in which students will be introduced to the learning principles associated with analyzing big data. Students will have the opportunity to view data from authentic community contexts and collaborate with business, industry, and government entities to support the development of citizenship. The VDOE has proposed standards of learning and a curriculum framework for this course and would like to provide an opportunity for public comment.

To learn more about the proposed course, review the standards of learning and curriculum framework, preview the anticipated approval and implementation timeline, and/or participate in the public hearing, visit the VDOE Data Science webpage. The virtual public hearings are scheduled for January 11 at 5:30 p.m. and January 20 at 7:30 p.m. Interested participants must register on the website.

Community Announcements

The York County School Division offers local businesses and organizations the opportunity to share information with students and parents regarding educational/enrichment activities, events and opportunities, which are either available to YCSD students or support division programs. These flyers are neither sponsored nor endorsed by the York County School Division or the schools, but are made available as a community service for our families.

Community announcements can also be found on the division website and each school's website.
