Online Tutoring

Last week, the York County School Division announced a new program to provide students with extra academic help this school year. YCSD has contracted with FEV Tutor, a nationally-recognized company, to provide free online tutoring services for students in grades 3-12.

Students and families will have access to support at any time, from any device with an internet connection. Support sessions are live, but do not involve device cameras as they are conducted through chat and a whiteboard. You can learn more about the FEV Tutor on the division website.

VDOE Parent Portal

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is offering families a new method to access their student’s Virginia Assessment Program test results. The Virginia Assessment Parent Portal will initially include results from the Reading and Mathematics Growth Assessments given in grades 3-8 at the beginning of the school year. Families of students in grades 3-8 will receive information from YCSD shortly after Winter Break with directions on how to create and access their private accounts.

CTE Advisory Committee

Applications are being accepted for the YCSD Career and Technical Education (CTE) Advisory Committee. The committee’s role is to inform the school division of current job needs and projected workforce trends, make recommendations on training and instructional resources, participate in work-based learning and career connection activities for students, and to promote CTE instructional programs. The CTE Advisory Committee is composed of members of the public, including students, teachers, parents, and representatives from business, industry, and labor. The CTE Advisory Committee meets at regular intervals during the year and committee members are expected to attend meetings on a regular basis. Committee members will become knowledgeable about CTE instructional programs in York County and the requirements of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

To apply for the 2021-22 York County CTE Advisory Committee, please complete the online application and return it to Jennifer Romanelli at jromanelli@ycsd.york.va.us by January 3, 2022.

Purple Star Schools

Magruder Elementary School has joined the list of schools within the division recognized for their commitment to serving military children and their families. These schools receive a three-year designation as a Virginia Department of Education Purple Star School. Coventry Elementary School, Grafton Bethel Elementary School and Tabb Middle School were also honored for the second time, bringing the total number of YCSD schools earning this designation to 11.

The Purple Star award honors schools that demonstrate a commitment to meeting military families' needs, while also providing resources and programming related to transitions and academic planning. Virginia is home to several of the largest and most important military installations in the country and approximately 31% of all YCSD students have at least one parent serving in the military.

TES Recognized by U.S. News & World Report

Tabb Elementary School received a top ten ranking in Virginia in the U.S. News & World Report's inaugural rating of elementary and middle schools nationwide. TES was named the #10 elementary school in Virginia based on 2019 reading proficiency and math assessment results. The rankings evaluated more than 80,000 public schools at the state and district level.

The York County School Division offers local businesses and organizations the opportunity to share information with students and parents regarding educational/enrichment activities, events and opportunities, which are either available to YCSD students or support division programs. These flyers are neither sponsored nor endorsed by the York County School Division or the schools, but are made available as a community service for our families.
