In August, the division adjusted the school calendar to include Tuesday, November 3, as a regular school day. As November 3 is also Election Day, the division will enact a one-hour delay for the Hybrid Model to reduce the possibility of traffic and congestion near polling locations during the early morning hours. Student drop-off and bus routes will run one hour later than normal and Hybrid Model students learning from home on Tuesdays should login for their morning meetings one hour later than normal.

Over the last two weeks students have begun returning to our schools, following the Hybrid Schedule for in-person learning. Staff are eagerly preparing for our second and third grade students to return next Monday, October 19. This evening, Dr. Shandor and senior staff presented new tentative, target dates for bringing more students safely onto our campuses.

The York County School Board will hold its next monthly meeting at 7 p.m., Monday, September 28 at York Hall. While this meeting is open to the public and public comments will be welcomed as part of the meeting, please be aware seating will be limited as physical distancing and other mitigation strategies will be in place. The meeting will be broadcast live on YCSD-TV (Cox Cable channel 47 and Verizon channel 39) and will be made available on YouTube within two business days.


YMS Student Recognized in Broadcom MASTERS Competition

Please join #TeamYCSD in congratulating Michael Herath, a student at Yorktown Middle School. Michael was recently recognized as one of the top 300 competitors in the 10th annual Broadcom MASTERS competition, the nation’s premier science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) competition for middle school students.


YCSD Named School Division of Innovation

On Thursday, the state Board of Education recognized the York County School Division (YCSD) and 14 other Virginia school systems as "School Divisions of Innovation." This is the first time the state has awarded this designation authorized by the General Assembly in 2017.

This evening, Dr. Shandor and chief officers presented updates on the start of the school year and plans for returning students to in-person learning. In accordance with the School Board’s vote on July 23, staff have established target dates to begin in-person instruction for identified student groups prior to the end of the first nine weeks.


2020 SAT Scores Released, YCSD Students Surpass National Average

York County School Division (YCSD) students continue to outperform state and national averages on the SAT according to results released by the College Board this week. YCSD high school seniors achieved an average combined score of 1149, which is 98 points above the national average and 33 points above the state average. The 2020 results also represent an 18-point increase in the overall average score on the SAT from the previous year, resulting in the highest division average in four years.


August 2020 School Board Meeting Public Comments

The monthly School Board meeting for August will take place on Monday, August 24, beginning at 5 p.m. In accordance with state codes, the meeting will be held virtually and will be open to the public live on the division’s YouTube Channel and on YCSD-TV. Per School Board policy, public comment will be accepted as part of the meeting. Citizens can address the Board by leaving a recorded voicemail on Thursday, August 20.

The School Board and the York County School Division have scheduled a series of meetings to discuss plans for the 2020-21 school year. A special meeting, during which the superintendent and staff will present information, will take place Thursday, July 23 at 5 p.m.. Following that meeting, there will opportunities for stakeholders to provide comment through two virtual Public Comment Sessions scheduled for Monday, July 27 at 6 p.m. and Tuesday, July 28 at noon. Finally, a special meeting will take place on July 30 at 5 p.m. for the School Board to take action for the 2020-21 school year.
