K-12 Innovation Grant

Posted On: Monday, November 28, 2022

The York County School Division (YCSD) has been awarded the K-12 Innovation grant presented to us by the Virginia Department of Education.

Through this grant, YCSD will partner with Virginia Peninsula Community College (formerly Thomas Nelson Community College) to offer a dual enrollment program that allows high school students to earn the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) remote pilots license and complete a career studies certificate prior to graduating high school.

Students within the dual enrollment program will have opportunities to complete the newly developed Unmanned Aircraft Systems course through YCSD as well as the UMS 107: Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) Remote Pilot Ground School through Virginia Peninsula Community College. Additionally, students enrolled within the dual enrollment program will have the unique opportunity to engage in a variety of work-based learning experiences to prepare them to meet the demands of this growing labor market.

The division is excited to begin planning for the implementation of this new program beginning the 2023-24 school year.
