Title:   READING SPECIALIST

Position Type: Exempt

Primary Function:

Position is responsible for implementing a comprehensive literacy program at the assigned school. Position analyzes school literacy data and plans for future literacy needs. Position uses literacy data and division curriculum to guide and support teachers in best practice for literacy instruction. Position conducts staff development, models lessons, conducts classroom visitations and provides feedback to teachers and administrators on the school’s literacy program. Position provides explicit instruction to groups of students to support identified literacy needs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must possess a Bachelor’s degree and be eligible for a valid Virginia Teaching License with an endorsement in reading.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and supervisors.
  • Ability to monitor academic and social behavior of students.
  • Ability to move about in room to monitor students and check work in classrooms with varied seating and desk organization patterns.
  • Ability to prepare required written reports.

  • Review reading and writing data to develop individual reading plans for students not meeting benchmarks.
  • Tutor individuals in need of intervention
  • Teach small groups where intervention is needed.
  • Assess the individual and collective needs of students within the building.
  • Creates a comprehensive and systematic plan to support the growth of students needing intervention.
  • Assesses the individual and collective needs of teachers regarding literacy instruction.
  • Facilitates professional learning community discussions regarding reading and writing data.
  • Provides coaching assistance to targeted teachers in need of support with division-level literacy curriculum implementation Model collaborative teaching in the inclusion model.
  • Function as a member of school teams and committees (i.e. child study student assistance)
  • Manage student records - reading/language arts.
  • Consult with classroom teachers and administrators concerning reading/language arts issues.
  • Conduct staff development sessions in reading/language arts.
  • Recommend purchases for reading/language arts materials.
  • Consult with the principal (i.e. grouping, child assistance)
  • Monitor reading/language arts assessment data.
  • Demonstrate teaching strategies in classroom.
  • Analyze and interpret reading/language arts data for teachers and parents.
  • Conduct parent volunteer workshops.
  • Conduct parent workshops.
  • Consult with parents regarding reading/language arts progress of their child.
  • Works toward meeting identified division and building goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by principal.

Terms of Employment:
Teaching contract. Salary according to School Board Pay Plan.
Evaluation:
Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with School Board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of licensed personnel.
