Tabb High Student Attends Intel International Science FairPosted on: Friday, May 24, 2013Katherine Webb has just returned from this year's Intel International Science Fair in Phoenix, Arizona. She earned her way with 1st place wins for her Earth Science category project, A Revised Estimate of the Effect of Human Carbon Dioxide Emissions on Global Temperature, in local and regional science fairs. The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) is the world's largest international pre-college science competition. More than 1,500 students from more than 70 countries, regions and territories attend the event to display their independent research in the different categories. |
Collecting Data in AP Stats Just Got More FunPosted on: Friday, May 24, 2013Tabb High School students in Mr. Chris Olivo's Advance Placement Statistics course undertook a unique project designed to add a little fun to the data collection process. Students were divided into small groups and assigned the task of creating 40 paper airplanes based on four different styles. Once the building task was completed, they adjourned to the commons to fly the planes. Students then measured and recorded each plan’s flight distance using lengths of yarn. When the groups returned to class, they recorded the data and used the information to construct confidence intervals to determine the most effective design. |
Bethel Manor Teachers Perform in SOL Revue ProgramPosted on: Friday, May 24, 2013On Friday, May 10, 2013, students and teachers participated in the SOL Revue Program at Bethel Manor Elementary School. The program’s plot is based on The Wizard of Oz. Dorothy (Kindergarten teacher Beth Waller) has lost her way to be prepared for her upcoming test. Along the way, she encountered the Tin Man (Dawn Johnston), the Cowardly Lion (Billie Dambrauskas), the Scarecrow (Patty Richie), and Glenda the Good Witch (Dr. Betsy Poulsen, Principal) who each provided tips to be successful. Students enjoyed a variety of songs and skits, as all students came to show their support for students who will be testing this year. |
Tabb Middle School Sixth Graders Communicate with AuthorPosted on: Friday, May 24, 2013Students in Mrs. Evans' sixth grade English classes have been reading author Peg Kehret's novels, including Runaway Twin and Stolen Children, this year during Literature Circles. The students absolutely loved her books and encouraged other students to read them as well. In order to learn more about Mrs. Kehret's books and writing, the students generated questions and sent them to her via email. They were delighted to receive a response two days later and find that she answered each individual question. Ms. Kehret even added several attachments that further explained some of the questions. The students thought it was pretty cool to connect with one of their new favorite authors. |
Tabb High's Club Earth AdventuresPosted on: Friday, May 24, 2013Tabb High School's Club Earth had a successful year recycling paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and aluminum cans! Students volunteered to collect recyclables from all classrooms and hallway receptacles on a weekly basis. This made a significant impact on the school's carbon footprint. According to the EPA, recycling one plastic bottle will save enough energy to run a computer for 25 minutes or keep a 60-watt light bulb lit for six hours! Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run your television for three hours. Students from Tabb High's Club Earth celebrated the successful year by accepting a challenge to learn more about our local Chesapeake Bay and how human actions impact the environment. |
YCSD Students Supporting Tornado VictimsPosted on: Friday, May 24, 2013Mt. Vernon Elementary School students have begun a fundraising campaign to help the children affected by the EF5 tornado that hit Moore, Oklahoma this week. Third grade students set up posters and collection cans at their school. They took their efforts a step further and made cans and posters for each school in the division to encourage other students to support the fundraising efforts. The fundraiser will continue through June 6, 2013. All monies raised will be donated to the Red Cross. |

YCSD Teacher HonoredPosted on: Friday, May 17, 2013Mrs. Niccole Reinhart of Queens Lake Middle School was recently awarded the MyLunchMoney Awesome Teacher of the Year Award! MyLunchMoney asked students and parents to submit a 150 word nomination sharing why their teacher is awesome! Parents and students submitted more than 50 nominations for Mrs. Reinhard, earning her the recognition. As the award winner, Mrs. Reinhart received a $300 prize and Queens Lake Middle School will receive a donation of $500. |
Kindergarten Recycling ProjectsPosted on: Friday, May 17, 2013Students in Mrs. Val Stitt's kindergarten class at Grafton Bethel Elementary School worked with their parents to make an object by reusing and recycling items from their homes. The students had to present their projects and write about them in their journals. |
