Senator Mamie Locke and Delegate Gordon Helsel spent a morning visiting classrooms and talking to students and teachers at Tabb Middle School (TMS) as part of a statewide initiative to encourage elected officials to visit at least one school in their district this month. “Take Your Legislator to School” Month is coordinated annually by the Virginia School Board Association and the Governor. |

European Explorers Visit Third Graders at Seaford ElementaryPosted on: Friday, November 15, 2013The third grade teachers at Seaford Elementary School (SES) dressed as European Explorers, Jacques Cartier, Christopher Newport, Juan Ponce de Leon and Christopher Columbus to introduce the unit of explorers to their students. Students traveled around to each classroom to listen to a short presentation given by each explorer, ask questions of the explorer and collect information that they will use to create their own explorer iMovies. |
BHS Serve Up a Healthy ChallengePosted on: Friday, November 15, 2013Bruton High School (BHS) earned a $500 award as part of Sodexo’s annual Healthy High School Challenge. Sodexo, the Food Services provider for the York County School Division, created the national competition as a fun and interactive way to get high school students thinking about making healthy food choices. Through this program, students earned points for their school every time they selected healthy foods from Sodexo menus. Students also earned double points for purchasing the featured healthy item of the week. Each school’s points were totaled and the top schools earned between $500 and $4,000 for student-organized activities. |

TMS Students Hold Pet Supply Donation DrivePosted on: Friday, November 15, 2013Sixth graders at Tabb Middle School (TMS) have been inspired by reading Peg Kehret's novel, Ghost Dog Secrets. The novel brings to light the need to make a difference in life. Students have learned that they are the "somebody" in the phrase "Somebody ought to do something." Students held a Pet Supply Donation Drive for two weeks. Newspapers, towels, cat and dog food, and toys were collected in English classes. All items will be delivered to the Peninsula SPCA. |
SES Relay for Life TeamPosted on: Friday, November 08, 2013The Seaford Elementary School Relay for Life team raised more than $400 for Cancer Research at Pizza and Pumpkins night, hosted by the PTA. Each class submitted a wreath to auction off. |

Students Working to Fight HungerPosted on: Friday, November 08, 2013School of the Arts students (SOA) learned about the issue of hunger, as well as about different types of clay pots while participating in the Empty Bowls project this year. Empty Bowls is an international project to fight hunger. Participants create ceramic bowls and then serve a simple meal of soup and bread. In exchange for a small donation, guests choose one of the ceramic bowls to keep as a reminder that there are always empty bowls in the world. |
