YCSD Recognized for Green Efforts

The Virginia School Boards Association has recognized the York County School Division as a Certified Green School Division. The annual challenge encourages implementation of specific environmental policies and practical actions that reduce the carbon emissions generated by both the local school division and the broader community. This is the fifth year the awards were given out.


Seaford Elementary Walkathon

Seaford Elementary School (SES) students raised $25,275 in Seaford's 4th Annual PTA Walk-A-Thon. The student who raised the most money from each grade had pizza lunch with Mrs. Trench and Mrs. Head. As part of their reward, they also had the chance to turn their principal into a mummy. Of course, they made sure to stick with their school spirit! In addition, the top three students earned special prizes.


Grafton Middle School Transforms PE

Grafton Middle School (GMS) is using iPads in Physical Education classes to transform the way we teach. The students used iPads to film their fitness stations during High Intensity Interval Training to check form and movement technique. PE is a great subject area to use iPads effectively to support learning. The videos show students’ performance and assessment (self and peer). It provides instant feedback to the students and makes them more aware of effort, body language, and body position.


Fashion Careers Highlighted at VCU

Members of the Tabb High School (THS) Fashion Marketing program and Marketing teacher-coordinator, Ms. Christina Majka, attended the Fashion Career workshop at Virginia Commonwealth University on Friday, November 8, 2013. Students were provided an opportunity to hear firsthand what it is like in the Fashion Industry today from key industry members. Valuable insight was provided by speakers on such topics as industry trends, career opportunities, and educational requirement. A campus tour followed the workshop.


GBES Treats for the Troops

Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES) SCA representatives and officers made goody bags for the Newport News USO to deliver to local troops stationed in Afghanistan.


YFPE, Inc. Prize Patrol

The York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. awarded the Fall 2013 Innovative Instruction Grants during prize patrol visits to schools. The Foundation received 27 grant proposals with a total of more than $14,035 from 69 teachers and five principals throughout York County. Of those, 14 proposals were selected for awards amounting to $6,474. Projects selected are designed to motivate, enrich, or enhance student learning.


TMS Mystery Madhouse

Tabb Middle School (TMS) students had a "spooktacular" time at the annual Mystery Madhouse event held in the Library Media Center. Students learned about the mystery genre and read mystery stories in preparation for creating their very own mysteries. Interested students submitted original stories to their English teachers in order to participate in this activity. Students shared their stories aloud with their peers and enjoyed snacks at this fun-filled event. Mrs. Kirstin Brendel, eighth grade English teacher, Ms. Nanci Diggs, Library Media Specialist, Mrs. Nancy Hehir, sixth grade English teacher, and Mrs. Michelle Gazarik, parent volunteer, were all on hand in the library to listen to and enjoy students' stories.


Microsoft Expert Educator

Congratulations to Chelsei Fox, sixth grade teacher at Grafton Middle School (GMS), on being selected by Microsoft as an Expert Educator. Chelsei is one of 250 Expert Educators to be announced from around the world. The Microsoft Expert Educator Program recognizes pioneer educators globally who use technology to transform education. Expert Educators work closely with Microsoft to lead innovation in education. As an Expert Educator, Chelsei will attend the Microsoft in Education Global Forum in Barcelona, Spain in March 2014.


Legislative Visit

Local state legislators headed back to school in November. Senator Mamie Locke and Delegate Gordon Helsel spent a morning visiting classrooms and talking to students and teachers at Tabb Middle School (TMS) as part of a statewide initiative to encourage elected officials to visit at least one school in their district this month. “Take Your Legislator to School” Month is coordinated annually by the Virginia School Board Association and the Governor.
