Student Artists RecognizedPosted on: Friday, May 09, 2014The Peninsula Fine Arts Center recognized 13 high school students, including three from the York County School Division (YCSD), for artworks exhibited in “Prefaces 2014” at an awards reception on May 4. “Prefaces 2014” includes artworks from students attending area high schools. Artist and PFAC instructor Lee Gerry Wertheimer served as juror for the show, selecting 131 artworks from 490 entries. The exhibition is on display until May 25. |
QLMS Students Share Artwork with the WorldPosted on: Friday, May 02, 2014Move over famous artists! Queens Lake Middle School (QLMS) artists are taking over the spotlight! Debby McClallen, the school's art teacher, has teamed up with Artsonia, the world's largest online kid's art museum, to display the students' artwork. The public gallery can be found online at: www.artsonia.com/schools/QueensLake1. Visitors can browse the artwork in the school gallery by grade level, or by specific exhibits. QLMS students join thousands of students from over 130 countries whose artwork is showcased on Artsonia. "This program is a wonderful way to get parents and family members more involved in Art Educations," said Debby McClallen. Distinguished Achievement AwardsPosted on: Friday, May 02, 2014Governor Terry McAuliffe and the Board of Education announced that three York County School Division (YCSD) schools: Coventry Elementary, Mt. Vernon Elementary and Tabb Middle schools earned the Board of Education Distinguished Achievement Award as part of the 2014 Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) awards for advanced learning and achievement. The VIP award program recognizes schools and divisions that exceed minimum state and federal accountability standards and achieve excellence goals established by the governor and the board. State Odyssey of the Mind ChampionsPosted on: Friday, May 02, 2014The Queens Lake Middle School (QLMS) Odyssey of the Mind claimed First Place at the state tournament in Rocky Mount last weekend. The team competed in the Not So Haunted House category, which had to include special effects, a narrator and a surprise ending. Not surprising was the fact that the QLMS team earned perfect scores from the judges in two categories! The students are coached by Assessment & Compliance Coordinator Keith Wright and math teacher Carrie Provensen. “This team truly thrived under pressure,” said Keith Wright. “They’re some of the most dynamic students we’ve ever had the pleasure of coaching.” As state champions, the QLMS team advances to the World Finals, which take place at Iowa State University in May. |
YMS Students' Read to Feed Project Raises over $2,000!Posted on: Friday, April 25, 2014Yorktown Middle School (YMS) took Read Across America global by raising over $2,000 in a month-long "Read to Feed" campaign conducted through English classes. The funds enabled YMS to purchase: 5 flocks of chicks, 5 flocks of ducks & geese, 5 honey bee packages, 3 llamas, a trio of rabbits, a set of tree seedlings, a goat and a heifer through Heifer International. In addition, the money raised will help send two young girls to school. Great Job YMS! You should be proud. You have made a difference in the world. |

The #GlobalSelfie is a NASA sponsored project. NASA intends to use the photos collected to create one mosaic image of Earth. |
YCSD Employee Acquires Prestigious CredentialsPosted on: Friday, April 25, 2014James Lash, York County School Division’s (YCSD) Associate Director for Pupil Transportation, has earned the top national certification possible from the National Association for Pupil Transportation (NAPT). Lash is the 148th person in the United States and Canada to achieve this recognition. The NAPT Professional Certification Program was established in 1989 to recognize the achievements and expertise of individuals in various administrative and support positions within the pupil transportation field. Administrative, supervisory and support personnel involved in pupil transportation are eligible for professional certification. Certification is based on an individual's career experience, education, expertise, and achievement in the field of pupil transportation. |
High School Students Create Winning Design for NASA's First Flight of OrionPosted on: Friday, April 25, 2014Congratulations to the Governor’s School for Science and Technology (GSST)! The GSST Team, which includes three York County School Division (YCSD) students, was named the winner of NASA’s high school Exploration Design Challenge (EDC)! The announcement came during a ceremony held at the opening of the 2014 USA Science and Engineering Festival in Washington. |
