YMS Students' Read to Feed Project Raises over $2,000!Posted on: Friday, April 25, 2014Yorktown Middle School (YMS) took Read Across America global by raising over $2,000 in a month-long "Read to Feed" campaign conducted through English classes. The funds enabled YMS to purchase: 5 flocks of chicks, 5 flocks of ducks & geese, 5 honey bee packages, 3 llamas, a trio of rabbits, a set of tree seedlings, a goat and a heifer through Heifer International. In addition, the money raised will help send two young girls to school. Great Job YMS! You should be proud. You have made a difference in the world. |
YHS Students Participate in #GlobalSelfie DayPosted on: Friday, April 25, 2014York High School (YHS) students in Mrs. Holtschneider's IB Biology class celebrated Earth Day with a #GlobalSelfie. The #GlobalSelfie is a NASA sponsored project. NASA intends to use the photos collected to create one mosaic image of Earth. |
YCSD Employee Acquires Prestigious CredentialsPosted on: Friday, April 25, 2014James Lash, York County School Division’s (YCSD) Associate Director for Pupil Transportation, has earned the top national certification possible from the National Association for Pupil Transportation (NAPT). Lash is the 148th person in the United States and Canada to achieve this recognition. The NAPT Professional Certification Program was established in 1989 to recognize the achievements and expertise of individuals in various administrative and support positions within the pupil transportation field. Administrative, supervisory and support personnel involved in pupil transportation are eligible for professional certification. Certification is based on an individual's career experience, education, expertise, and achievement in the field of pupil transportation. |
High School Students Create Winning Design for NASA's First Flight of OrionPosted on: Friday, April 25, 2014Congratulations to the Governor’s School for Science and Technology (GSST)! The GSST Team, which includes three York County School Division (YCSD) students, was named the winner of NASA’s high school Exploration Design Challenge (EDC)! The announcement came during a ceremony held at the opening of the 2014 USA Science and Engineering Festival in Washington. |
Two YCSD Schools Listed Among Nations BestPosted on: Friday, April 25, 2014Two York County School Division (YCSD) high schools made U.S. News and World Report’s annual list of the nation’s best high schools. The report, released this week, analyzed more than 31,000 public high schools and eventually considered 19,411 for possible ranking. Tabb High School (THS) made the list ranked 464th nationally and 20th in Virginia, while Grafton High School (GHS) is ranked 628th in the nation and 24th in Virginia. A three-step process was used to determine the final rankings. The first two steps used performance on state proficiency tests as the benchmarks. The third step assessed the degree to which schools prepare students for college-level work. |
YRA Great Computer Challenge TeamsPosted on: Friday, April 18, 2014York River Academy (YRA) took two teams to Old Dominion University to participate in this year’s Great Computer Challenge (GCC). The teams were entered in two categories of competition: Video Editing and Desktop Presentations. Teams participating in GCC are only allowed to bring one computer and certain approved peripheral items. No outside resources can be used, and no internet access is allowed. Students have three hours to complete the challenge, using only their equipment, their computer skills, and their creative minds. |
TMS Action for AnimalsPosted on: Friday, April 18, 2014Tabb Middle School (TMS) students continue to work on a yearlong, school-wide endeavor that has culminated in student’s involvement with an international charity to protect elephants. In the fall, students researched animal abuse and presented projects focusing on various organizations and causes related to animal abuse. In December, a presentation on elephant poaching was selected as the common cause for the school this year. The TMS "Action for Animal Awareness" project has so far raised $800 to help support the fight against elephant poaching. TMS will donate the funds to the Space for Giants program, a wildlife conservation organization. |
YCSD Students Chat with Hillary, Chelsea ClintonPosted on: Friday, April 18, 2014Several Grafton High School (GHS) students and EXTEND students from each middle school were selected to participate in a live Skype conversation with Hillary Rodham Clinton and Chelsea Clinton. The York County School Division (YCSD) was one of just four locations in the nation chosen to participate in the No Ceilings: The Full Participation Project chat. The project looks at progress women and girls have made in the last 20 years. YCSD students had the opportunity to ask the Clintons questions and share their own stories. The students were selected after collaborating earlier this year to bring awareness of gender inequality in developing countries to the attention of the community. YCSD 2015 Teachers of the YearPosted on: Friday, April 18, 2014The York County School Division (YCSD) is pleased to announce Mr. Doug Roper as the 2015 Teacher of the Year. Dr. Eric Williams, Division Superintendent, led a “prize patrol” to surprise the Tabb High School history teacher, the YCSD High School Teacher of the Year, in his classroom on school spirit day. A graduate of Elon College, Mr. Roper has spent 36 years educating students in York County.
