YFPE Radios Help YCSD School Nurses Support Yorktown Day Parade

Monica White, school nurse for Tabb Elementary School; Michael Guttilla, a Booster Club parent; and Kay Balzano, school nurse for Bethel Manor Elementary Schoolprovided first aid assistance and support to the NNDCC cadets marching in the Yorktown Day Parade on October 19. A grant from The York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. (YFPE, Inc.) assisted Tabb cadets participating in the Yorktown Day Parade on Sunday. Carrying Motorola radios, purchased with the grant, and first aid supplies, the assistance team worked on the parade route, stayed in communication with the unit, and remained available for emergencies with spectators. All three are proud cadet parents — well done!


YHS Marching Band Repeats as Top Band

The York High School (YHS) Falcon Marching Band was recently recognized as the top band in back-to-back competitions! Falcon pride soared as students earned first place at both the Bayside Band Classic in Virginia Beach and the 23rd Annual Menchville Monarch Invitational in Newport News!


Eagle Scout Project benefits WMES Nature Trail

Dylan Doelling, a local Eagle Scout, recently built bird houses for the Waller Mill Elementary School (WMES) Nature Trail. He completed the construction with support from his friends and church community. He mounted the new bird houses along the nature trail this fall. The 30-plus houses will make wonderful new homes for our feathered friends.

The York Falcon Marching Band seniors, who have been leaders at York High School (YHS) and in the local community, will be among those seniors recognized during YHS's Senior Night Ceremony on October 24.

Students at Dare Elementary School are learning how they can make a difference for those who are hungry in their local community. Food drive managers from the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank visited first through third grade classes and discussed how people can partner together to help hunger.


Queens Lake Art Students Win First Place at An Occasion for the Arts

Congratulations to the Queens Lake Middle School art students for winning first place for Middle School Art at An Occasion for the Arts, which was held in downtown Williamsburg in October. They competed against all Williamsburg area middle schools. Honorable mention awards also went to the following students: Alexis Johnston, Maria Vozikis and Josh Falcone.


YCFD Visits DES Kindergarten and Preschool

On October 8, the York County Fire Department (Station 1) made a special visit to teach the Dare Elementary School (DES) preschool and kindergarten students about fire safety. The students really enjoyed spending time with the special visitors and getting the chance to try some of the safety tools.


Tabb High School NNDCC Receives Grant for Uniforms

The Virginia Peninsula Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (VIPMOAA) presented the Tabb High School NNDCC unit with a $500 donation for uniform support. The NNDCC unit graciously accepted the grant at the company's Awards Night in May 2014. The grant helped the unit immensely, as it does not receive uniform funding from the Navy. Uniform items were running low, but thanks to the generosity of the VIPMOAA, the cadets at Tabb High confidently wear their new uniform items with pride.


GMS Field Hockey Ovarian Cancer Awareness Game

The Grafton Middle School (GMS) field hockey parents hosted an Ovarian Cancer Awareness event in coordination with the GMS-YMS field hockey game. The team wore teal team t-shirts and teal shoelaces, and there was a raffle to help raise funds. They raised $357 to donate to a local ovarian cancer organization, the Karen O'Hare Ovarian Cancer Memorial Run.


W!SE Blue Star Schools

As a result of outstanding results on the W!SE (Working In Support of Education) Financial Literacy Certification Test, Grafton High School, Tabb High School, and York River Academy have been named “Blue Star Schools” for the 2013-14 school year. This national standardized test is administered to students after a course or unit on personal finance. In order for schools to be awarded this distinction, the school must achieve a 75% pass rate and have students who took the test achieve an average score of 80% or higher. Congratulations to the students and teachers on this achievement!
