AFCEA Science Teaching Tools Award

Congratulations to teachers Eric Grube and CDR Wooten from Tabb High School (THS) on receiving the 2014 Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) Science Teaching Tools Award! Mr. Grube and CDR Wooten will receive $2,310 to launch their Rocket Payload Experimentation Project. Physics and NJROTC students will collaborate to build and launch rockets capable of lifting various payloads.


BHS Garden to Table Demonstration

Students in Amy Lockwood’s Environmental Science classes at Bruton High School (BHS) have embraced the Garden to Table experience this year. Throughout the school year, students cultivated a variety of plants in a school garden. As a culminating activity the Executive Chef of Kingsmill Resort, Dale Ford, demonstrated healthy recipes using some of the herbs and vegetables grown in the BHS garden. Students were also able to speak with a nutritionist and fitness trainer about healthy lifestyles.


TES Paws for the Cause

Tabb Elementary School (TES) students are big supporters of the school’s Paws For The Cause Relay Team on-going fundraising for the American Cancer Society. This year, TES students raised more than $300 through the annual Pet Contest. Students submitted photo entries of their pets in various categories such as Cutest, Best Dressed and Best in Show. Votes were then cast for $0.25 each. This year, there were a record 125 entries with six winners.


YCSD Honorees

Congratulations to the 2014 York County School Division (YCSD) Employee Recognition Program recipients! Troy Graves, Manager of Applications Support for the division, received the Superintendent's Award. This award honors an employee who has made a particularly meaningful contribution to the school division or the community. In presenting the award, Superintendent Eric Williams noted that Graves brainstorms and creates solutions to support other division employees in their respective roles. Kim Stratton, a Seaford Elementary School teacher, was honored with the Spirit of Education Award. This award recognizes one employee who symbolizes the essence of public education. Prior to presenting the award, Dr. Williams shared that she is an exemplary example in giving her students the opportunity


GMS Helps NATASHA House

Grafton Middle School (GMS) students in Mrs. Barnes’ seventh grade English class raised $173 to support NATASHA House, a local homeless shelter.

School of the Arts (SOA) teacher Alison Hall was one of twenty teachers from across the nation selected to attend a special Teacher Appreciation White House Social on Wednesday, May 7. Alison participated in a conversation with White House Administration including lifelong educator Dr. Jill Biden and Education Secretary Arne Duncan. Congratulations to Alison for representing the York County School Division (YCSD) in our Nation’s Capital!


Student Artists Recognized

The Peninsula Fine Arts Center recognized 13 high school students, including three from the York County School Division (YCSD), for artworks exhibited in “Prefaces 2014” at an awards reception on May 4. “Prefaces 2014” includes artworks from students attending area high schools. Artist and PFAC instructor Lee Gerry Wertheimer served as juror for the show, selecting 131 artworks from 490 entries. The exhibition is on display until May 25.


QLMS Students Share Artwork with the World

Move over famous artists! Queens Lake Middle School (QLMS) artists are taking over the spotlight! Debby McClallen, the school's art teacher, has teamed up with Artsonia, the world's largest online kid's art museum, to display the students' artwork. The public gallery can be found online at: www.artsonia.com/schools/QueensLake1. Visitors can browse the artwork in the school gallery by grade level, or by specific exhibits. QLMS students join thousands of students from over 130 countries whose artwork is showcased on Artsonia. "This program is a wonderful way to get parents and family members more involved in Art Educations," said Debby McClallen. Distinguished Achievement Awards

Governor Terry McAuliffe and the Board of Education announced that three York County School Division (YCSD) schools: Coventry Elementary, Mt. Vernon Elementary and Tabb Middle schools earned the Board of Education Distinguished Achievement Award as part of the 2014 Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) awards for advanced learning and achievement. The VIP award program recognizes schools and divisions that exceed minimum state and federal accountability standards and achieve excellence goals established by the governor and the board. Congratulations on a job well done!


State Odyssey of the Mind Champions

The Queens Lake Middle School (QLMS) Odyssey of the Mind claimed First Place at the state tournament in Rocky Mount last weekend. The team competed in the Not So Haunted House category, which had to include special effects, a narrator and a surprise ending. Not surprising was the fact that the QLMS team earned perfect scores from the judges in two categories! The students are coached by Assessment & Compliance Coordinator Keith Wright and math teacher Carrie Provensen. “This team truly thrived under pressure,” said Keith Wright. “They’re some of the most dynamic students we’ve ever had the pleasure of coaching.” As state champions, the QLMS team advances to the World Finals, which take place at Iowa State University in May.
