YHS Marching Band Top in the State!Posted on: Monday, November 03, 2014York High School’s (YHS) band director, Mr. Richard Purvis, led the York High School Marching Band to superior excellence! The York Falcon Marching Band maintained their 2014 award-winning momentum, earning top honors as the 2014 Virginia State Champions at the USBands Virginia State Championship (Open Class) in Virginia Beach. The band captured Visual and Overall Effect Caption Awards during the competition. On November 15, the band will take their York High talent and pride to New Jersey, where they will compete at the USBands Open Class National Championships. |
VSBA AwardsPosted on: Tuesday, October 28, 2014The Virginia School Board Association (VSBA) has recognized the members of the York County School Board with VSBA Academy Awards. The association recognizes board members for their dedication, time and hard work in improving boardmanship skills through VSBA meetings, conferences, board development and training, and active involvement in the association. VSBA members earn credits for VSBA Academy Awards which are based on participation from July 1 to June 30 of each year. During the September monthly meeting, Dr. Carl James, Interim Superintendent, presented those board members in attendance with their awards. Dr. Robert George was unable to attend the September meeting. |
Restaurant WeekPosted on: Monday, October 27, 2014The York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. invites you to dine out during the 3rd Annual Restaurant Week in support of the York County School Division. Proceeds from participating restaurants support teacher grants, school grants, student and employee scholarships as well as student resource funds. This year, Restaurant Week will be from Saturday, November 1 through Saturday, November 8. Tabb High School's NNDCC Assist in Honor FlightPosted on: Monday, October 27, 2014On October 18, the Navy National Defense Cadet Corps (NNDCC) from Tabb High School assisted World War II and Korean War veterans at the Colonial Heritage Community Center by preparing buses with lunch packages, loading water, and listening to the veterans' stories. After a brief ceremony, the veterans were transported to visit the World War II and Korean War memorials in Washington, D.C. |
YFPE Radios Help YCSD School Nurses Support Yorktown Day ParadePosted on: Monday, October 27, 2014Monica White, school nurse for Tabb Elementary School; Michael Guttilla, a Booster Club parent; and Kay Balzano, school nurse for Bethel Manor Elementary Schoolprovided first aid assistance and support to the NNDCC cadets marching in the Yorktown Day Parade on October 19. A grant from The York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. (YFPE, Inc.) assisted Tabb cadets participating in the Yorktown Day Parade on Sunday. Carrying Motorola radios, purchased with the grant, and first aid supplies, the assistance team worked on the parade route, stayed in communication with the unit, and remained available for emergencies with spectators. All three are proud cadet parents — well done! |

Falcon pride soared as students earned first place at both the Bayside Band Classic in Virginia Beach and the 23rd Annual Menchville Monarch Invitational in Newport News! |
Eagle Scout Project benefits WMES Nature TrailPosted on: Monday, October 27, 2014Dylan Doelling, a local Eagle Scout, recently built bird houses for the Waller Mill Elementary School (WMES) Nature Trail. He completed the construction with support from his friends and church community. He mounted the new bird houses along the nature trail this fall. The 30-plus houses will make wonderful new homes for our feathered friends. |

Friends Feeding FriendsPosted on: Monday, October 20, 2014Students at Dare Elementary School are learning how they can make a difference for those who are hungry in their local community. Food drive managers from the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank visited first through third grade classes and discussed how people can partner together to help hunger. |
Queens Lake Art Students Win First Place at An Occasion for the ArtsPosted on: Monday, October 20, 2014Congratulations to the Queens Lake Middle School art students for winning first place for Middle School Art at An Occasion for the Arts, which was held in downtown Williamsburg in October. They competed against all Williamsburg area middle schools. Honorable mention awards also went to the following students: Alexis Johnston, Maria Vozikis and Josh Falcone. |
