GMS Masquerade Masks

Mrs. Layne's sculpture & crafts classes at Grafton Middle School (GMS) studied masquerade masks, and designed and sculpted their own out of clay. The ceramic masks were then painted and embellished with feathers, jewels and glitter.

Second grade students at Waller Mill Elementary School (WMES) are embracing the winter weather in their school projects. They recently created their own snow globes and completed a writing activity "If I lived in a snow globe..."


We Can Be Heroes (Great Kindness Challenge)

York County School Division elementary schools participated in the Great Kindness Challenge the week of January 26. Waller Mill Elementary School wrapped up the week with a community hero tunnel. As students entered school Friday morning, they walked through a tunnel made up of local “heroes,” including representatives from the school division and the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office. The Great Kindness Challenge is a week-long proactive and positive bully prevention initiative that improves school climate and increases student engagement.


YHS Robotics Competition Winners

Congratulations to Kyle Kerner, Trent Johnson and Robert Watts, members of the York High School (YHS) FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Team, for finishing in first place (out of 25 teams) in the Virginia FIRST Eastern Regional Robotics Competition held on the campus of Norfolk State University on Saturday, January 24. This team earned one of five invitations to compete in the Virginia FIRST Robotics Competition to be held in Richmond on February 28.


Great Kindness Challenge

York County School Division elementary schools are participating in the Great Kindness Challenge the week of January 26. The Great Kindness Challenge is a proactive and positive bully prevention initiative that improves school climate and increases student engagement. The Great Kindness Challenge is one week devoted to performing as many acts of kindness as possible. Using a provided checklist of 50 kind acts, students take the challenge and prove that bullying is weak and kindness is strength. Various activities, such as community hero tunnels, are planned at each elementary school throughout the week.


Tabb Middle School Students Visit York Convalescent

As part of their transformative learning project, Lisa Spruill's public speaking class at Tabb Middle School (TMS) researched what life was like for a teenager living in the 40s and 50s. Based on their research with TMS librarian Nanci Diggs, students wrote a set of questions that they used to interview the residents at the York Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center. After the field trip, the students presented their findings to their classmates. They also discussed their experiences talking with the residents. The students shared with Mrs. Spruill, Ms. Diggs and their classmates that the project was a personally fulfilling experience.


York County School Division 2015 Science Fair Winners Announced

More than 300 students participated in the annual York County School Division (YCSD) Science Fair this week. This year’s theme, “Dare to Dream,” challenged students to ask new questions and investigate a wide range of topics. Guest judges representing local colleges, universities and businesses reviewed 232 projects before selecting the winners. First, second, and third place winners are invited to apply to participate in the regional Tidewater Science Fair held at Old Dominion University on Saturday, March 14, 2015. Congratulations to all students who participated in the fair and a sincere thank you to the science teachers who encouraged and guided students throughout the scientific process.


Dark Side of the Internet Parent Seminars

Internet use has grown exponentially around the world, and teenagers are the primary producers and users of web and social media content. They share their ideas, thoughts and pictures with others online. The unfortunate reality, however, is that the Internet has also created an environment in which private information can, knowingly or unknowingly, end up in the wrong hands. The York County PTA and the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office are hosting Digital Safety parent seminars at four York County schools next month. These seminars are designed to help parents navigate the dilemmas presented by the digital world our kids inhabit. Each seminar will provide an overview of current digital threats to children.


Science Fair

The York County School Division (YCSD) Science Fair will be held on Thursday, January 15 at the Grafton School Complex. YCSD middle and high school students will present their projects for judging from 4:30 to 7 p.m. after which, public viewing opportunities will take place. The event culminates with an awards ceremony at 8 p.m.


YMS Students Will Participate in GAITE

Eighth grade students Gavin McCabe and Sebastian Rivera will represent Yorktown Middle School (YMS) at this year's Greater Peninsula Governor's STEM Academy Exploratory Saturday Series beginning on January 24. They will participate in enrichment activities that target students in grades 7 and 8 who demonstrate an interest in science, technology, and math and show potential for success in academic and technical courses in these areas.
