Roger Searles Wins Grant from York Foundation for Public Education, Inc.

Roger Searles, a Walller Mill Elementary School teacher, received a $400 grant award for his new Bay Watch Club from the York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. (YFPE, Inc.). The award was given out on a surprise YFPE, Inc. Prize Patrol.


QLMS Students Teach Waller Mill Fifth Grade Students About BYOT

Queens Lake Middle School (QLMS) students completed a Transformative Project Based Learning on “Bring Your Own Technology” (BYOT). As part of the project, they shared their presentation with Waller Mill Elementary School’s fifth grade students.


Leprechauns Give Amnesty on Fines at Tabb High Library

Librarian Betty Lynn Darden and her assistant, Patrice Knight, offered "Luck in the Library" on St. Patrick's Day by granting amnesty on fines. Many students took advantage of this offer, returned overdue books and had their fines forgiven. This was a great day in the library as well as fun for all!


YHS Places in the FBLA Regional Competition

Congratulations to York High School's (YHS) Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) students who received awards at the Virginia FBLA Colonial Region Competitive Events Program at Thomas Nelson Community College. Eleven students earned first or second place in their individual competitive event and will be able to compete at the FBLA State Leadership Conference in Reston, Virginia, April 10 and 11.


Tabb High National Merit Commended Scholars

The following Tabb High School seniors were named 2015 National Merit Commended Scholars: Jingwei Song, Wendi Williams, Elissa Carpio, Nick Anselmo, Sean Aminali, Jacob McLaughlin, Megan Crow, and Julia Smith. The National Merit Commended Scholar title is based on a student’s performance on the PSAT, taken in the junior year. Approximately 1.5 million juniors take the test and roughly 34,000 are named as Commended Scholars.


MES Student Named Future Chef Competition Winner

Eighteen finalists representing each of the York County School Division's (YCSD) elementary schools competed in the Sodexo Future Chefs Culinary Competition on March 19. This was the first round of a national competition involving school systems from across the country. The primary goal of the contest is to get kids thinking about healthy eating by creating healthy recipes. The YCSD finalists’ recipes were chosen from among more than 100 entries. The finalists were then invited to create their snacks for a panel of judges to taste and score. Hungry spectators were allowed to sample all the entries as well — a deliciously challenging and fulfilling job!


YHS Student Wins Tidewater Science & Engineering Fair

On Saturday, March 14, dozens of York County students competed in the 64th Annual Tidewater Science and Engineering Fair at Old Dominion University. Students presented their scientific research to industry professionals from across the region. The 1st Place Overall Grand Prize was awarded to Suparnamaaya Prasad of York High School (YHS) for her project titled, “Nanotechnology-based Wrinkled Graphene for Flexible Electronics.” Suparnamaaya will receive an all-expense paid trip to the International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in May. Additionally, Everest Litchford of Grafton Middle School was awarded the Junior Division Second Award of Excellence for his physics project.


Dark Side of the Internet Parent Seminars Rescheduled

New dates have been set for the Digital Safety parent seminars that were canceled due to winter weather last month. These seminars, hosted by the York County PTA and the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office, are designed to help parents navigate the dilemmas presented by the digital world our kids inhabit. Each seminar will provide an overview of current digital threats to children (cyberbullying, online predators, oversharing, sexting, and sextortion) along with digital safety information.


YCSD Future Chefs Competition

Twenty elementary students will compete in the initial phase of the Sodexo Future Chefs Culinary Competition from 4:30 to 7 p.m., Thursday, March 19, at York High School. The finalists will create and present their submissions for judging and sampling. Judges will consider taste, texture, presentation and use of featured ingredients. The winner will go on to a regional competition and then potentially the national competition.


YCSD Students Win Regional Award in 2015 VSBA Art Contest

Local school board members were treated to an impressive display of creativity and faced some tough decisions in selecting the 2015 winners of the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) York County Regional Art Contest on March 11. Student art from the elementary, middle and high school levels represented each school division in the competition, which was judged at the regional forum for area school board members. Art created by Aariq Hug, Andrew Fiocca and Montaye Pool from Mt. Vernon Elementary School was the first place elementary winner. The VSBA Regional Art Contest was started in 1989 to promote the artistic talents of Virginia's public school students. For each of the nine VSBA regions, a winner is chosen for the elementary, middle, and high school levels. The winning art is
