Dark Side of the Internet Parent Seminars Rescheduled

New dates have been set for the Digital Safety parent seminars that were canceled due to winter weather last month. These seminars, hosted by the York County PTA and the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office, are designed to help parents navigate the dilemmas presented by the digital world our kids inhabit. Each seminar will provide an overview of current digital threats to children (cyberbullying, online predators, oversharing, sexting, and sextortion) along with digital safety information.


YCSD Future Chefs Competition

Twenty elementary students will compete in the initial phase of the Sodexo Future Chefs Culinary Competition from 4:30 to 7 p.m., Thursday, March 19, at York High School. The finalists will create and present their submissions for judging and sampling. Judges will consider taste, texture, presentation and use of featured ingredients. The winner will go on to a regional competition and then potentially the national competition.


YCSD Students Win Regional Award in 2015 VSBA Art Contest

Local school board members were treated to an impressive display of creativity and faced some tough decisions in selecting the 2015 winners of the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) York County Regional Art Contest on March 11. Student art from the elementary, middle and high school levels represented each school division in the competition, which was judged at the regional forum for area school board members. Art created by Aariq Hug, Andrew Fiocca and Montaye Pool from Mt. Vernon Elementary School was the first place elementary winner. The VSBA Regional Art Contest was started in 1989 to promote the artistic talents of Virginia's public school students. For each of the nine VSBA regions, a winner is chosen for the elementary, middle, and high school levels. The winning art is


Tabb Middle Wins Battle of the Books

Tabb Middle School's (TMS) Battle of the Books team won the county battle held at the York County Public Library on March 11. TMS competed against Grafton Middle School and Yorktown Middle School (YMS), with YMS coming in as a close second. Tabb will compete in the regional battle at the Williamsburg Regional Library on Saturday, March 21.


Mt. Vernon Elementary STEAM Club Wins Third Place at KidWind Competition

The Mt. Vernon Elementary School (MVES) Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) Club recently participated in the annual KidWind Engineering Completion in Virginia Beach. The team placed third in the Wind Turbine category and earned an opportunity to compete in the regional competition in April at James Madison University.


YHS Teacher Featured in Magazine

Amy Insley, theater teacher at York High School (YHS), has been honored by Coastal Virginia Magazine as a top teacher in Hampton Roads. This is the second consecutive year Insley has been featured in the magazine. Teachers were nominated by students, peers and/or parents last summer with online voting taking place from in November and December. The ten individuals receiving the greatest number of votes are profiled in the February/March Education issue. Additionally, Farm Fresh has generously promised to award 5000 Bonus Points to each winning teacher as part of their Farm Fresh 1234 The Community, a program dedicated to supporting local schools and children.


Queens Lake Middle School French Students Learn from Those Abroad

This year, students at Queens Lake Middle School are exchanging letters, pictures, emails, and videos with students studying English in France. Each student enrolled in French I or French II has a pen pal or 'correspondent' in a middle school in Ville d'Avray, a suburb outside of Paris. Madame VanDyke's French students are currently busy writing letters in French and creating a virtual tour of their school for their new French friends. Some students are communicating with their 'corres' on Snapchat, Facebook, and Instagram.


Tabb High Attends DECA State Leadership Conference

During the weekend of February 27-March 1, members of Tabb High School DECA traveled to Virginia Beach for the 72nd Annual Virginia DECA State Leadership Conference, along with their teachers, Mrs. Pitchford and Ms. Majka. The students earned a competitive spot at the State Leadership Convention through their success at the previously held District Leadership Conference. All 11 members met proficiency ratings in their events, and seven earned medals in their event. Proficiency went to Aron Marston, Mary Katherine Galoozis, Buddy Arcara, and George Glass. Students who earned medals in their events were Tyler Mills, Joe D'Autueil, Angel Joo, Allison Sherwood, Adam Hoffman, Sarah Lewis, and Jingwei Song. YCSD Calendar Update

The York County School Division is pleased to share that no additional changes will be made to the 2014-15 school calendar as a result of last week's early dismissal and school closing. Some schools will be making minor adjustments to their daily schedules to meet state requirements. Spring Break and Memorial Day will remain student and staff holidays and June 10 and 11 will remain early dismissal days for all schools. The superintendent and school board would like to thank our parents, students, and staff for their continued support through these difficult weather events.


Instructional Material Review

The York County School Division is currently conducting an Instructional Material Review (IMR) process for K-5 Science Instruction. All textbooks, teacher resources, student materials and electronic materials are reviewed and adopted through this process. Materials that correlate highly with the Virginia Standards of Learning and YSCD curriculum were targeted for the review process. At this time, parents and community stakeholders are invited to review, and provide feedback, on the materials recommended for adoption. The public preview day is scheduled for Monday, March 9, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the YCSD School Board Office.
