Waller Mill Elementary Wins Jingle Contest

Students at Waller Mill Elementary School (WMES) have been recognized for their talent. WMES was one of two local schools to win the Michael & Son Services jingle contest. Elementary schools within the company’s service areas were eligible to take part in a competition to create original videos of the Michael & Son jingle. As a winning school, WMES received a $5,000 check! In all, Michael & Sons awarded $40,000 to schools throughout Virginia and parts of Maryland.

The PTA Reflections Contest is an annual arts contest held every year to promote arts within our schools. There are six different categories in which participants can enter and there is a new theme each year. This year's theme was "The World Would Be a Better Place If..."

THS Cadets Support Breakfast with Santa

Cadets from the Tabb High School (THS) NNDCC unit assisted the York Exchange Club in the annual Breakfast with Santa on December 5 and 6. Saturday morning began early as Cadets arrived at Grafton Bethel Elementary School to begin the holiday festivities. Santa and Mrs. Clause arrived in holiday fashion to greet the kids. Activities included eating breakfast, participating in a cookie walk, taking photographs with our favorite Clauses, and receiving early gifts.

Come study with adults like you to achieve your career and life goals. YCSD adult education classes begin the week of January 12 for residents of York County.


GHS Food Drive a Huge Success

Grafton High School (GHS) students stepped up to the plate to support the Salvation Army Food Drive this year. The school's Student Council Association challenged classes to see who could collect the most donations in two weeks. In all, the school collected 2,695 food items!


Stuff the Bus

The York High School (YHS) Leadership class began exploring opportunities to support local charities during the holidays earlier this year. They learned about Wes Pak, a Seaford Elementary School student who started a Toys for Tots drive for patients at CHKD, they launched a Stuff the Bus for Wes campaign. Wes was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in 2011 and launched the Toy drive after being treated at CHKD. On December 11, YHS students traveled to various schools to collect donations for the Wes Pak 4th Annual Toys for Tots drive. The students are thankful for the outpouring of support as they loaded hundreds of toys to present to Wes.


BMES Families Celebrate Books!

Barnes and Noble hosted the third annual Bethel Manor Elementary School (BMES) Book Fair with an evening of books, music and treats. Families were invited to hear second grade students perform "I Pick Rap," and teachers share their favorite books. They could also decorate bookmarks and cupcakes and listen to the performances of the fourth and fifth grade chorus. It was a great night filled with music, fun and books!


York County School Board Office Gives Back

The York County School Board Office (SBO) staff participated in several community-service projects for the holidays. An Angel Tree was set up at the SBO for employees to choose a tag and buy gifts for specific children. Some gifts contained games, dolls, balls, bottles, and clothing. Even a bicycle and fishing pole were placed under the tree! Employees could also participate in a Toys for Tots collection for the Wes Pak 4th Annual Toy Drive for children at CHKD, which concludes December 11. A food drive for the York-Poquoson Food Closet was held in November and a second food drive will take place December 8-18.


Jamestown Outreach Comes to SES

The Jamestown Settlement brought the museum to second grade classrooms at Seaford Elementary School (SES) recently. The students explored the Powhatan Native American culture by examining reproduction artifacts to learn how tools, clothing, food, and housing were produced. They also learned how these Virginia Indians used natural resources from the Eastern Woodland environment to meet their needs.
