Dare Elementary Hosts Dog "Paw"ty

Students at Dare Elementary School had the opportunity to read to 4-H pet pals, which are trained companion dogs, at a dog "paw"ty after school recently. Students engaged in activities in various stations such as writing in dog journals, playing dog-themed reading games, and reading to the dogs.


VSBA Conference on Education

Several YCSD employees have been selected to present a mini-workshop at the 2015 Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) Conference on Education taking place on July 21, 2015 in Richmond. Dr. Vika Stephenson will present the topic, Developing a Division-wide Secondary Literacy Model; Laura Burton and Len Donvito will present on Building Teacher Capacity Using an On-Demand Format for Professional Development; and Lisa Ruffieux and Carrie Mokry will present the topic, Bedtime Stories and Beyond.


DARE Green Zone Gallery

Second grade students at Dare Elementary School have been working hard to teach others about the importance of Green Zone behaviors. They created an art gallery of Green Zone feelings and scenarios. Families and other classes were invited to walk through and view the amazing masterpieces. The Zones approach is a color-coded outline of appropriate and inappropriate behavior. It also provides strategies that teach students to cultivate respectful, productive, civil behavior, and transform disrespectful, destructive behavior while improving their ability to problem solve conflicts.


Odyssey of the Mind State Tournament

Five teams represented the York County School Division (YCSD) in the Virginia Odyssey of the Mind state competition on Saturday, April 19. All five teams placed in the top four for their selected problem and grade-level division. Two teams finished with second place rankings and will move on to compete in the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals at Michigan State University in May. Congratulations to Magruder Elementary (Experiencing Technical Difficulties – Division I) and Queens Lake Middle (Runaway Train – Division II)!


Stock Market Game Champions

Yorktown Elementary School (YES) fourth and fifth grade students participated in the National Stock Market Game this school year. Competing against more than 400 elementary, middle and high school teams, one of the YES fourth grade teams finished the year-long game in first place in Virginia. Congratulations to the first place team members: Ava Flores, Haley Scarborough, Samara Washington, and Ava Worley, and their coach Kirsten McLeod!


YCSD Road-E-O

The York County School Division School Bus Road-E-O will take place on Saturday, April 25 at the school bus garage located at 505 Cook Road, Yorktown. The event is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m., and will take place rain or shine. Approximately 40 drivers will compete in both conventional bus and transit bus competition. The first place contestants in both conventional and transit competition will represent York County in the Virginia School Bus Road-E-O which will be held in Norfolk at the Virginia Association for Pupil Transportation/VADOE Conference in June.


Dr. Shandor Presents Mrs. Leach with the YCSD Apple Award

Fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Lindsey Leach, received the YCSD Apple Award by Dr. Victor Shandor, division superintendent, on April 15. She received this award for achievements and contributions to Seaford Elementary both in and beyond the classroom.


Science Teacher of the Year Award

The Langley Chapter of the Air Force Association and the Virginia Air & Space Center have chosen to honor two YCSD educators for their work in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Yorktown Elementary School teacher Barbara Westlund was selected as the 2014-15 Science Teacher of the Year in the K-8 category and York River Academy teacher Veronica Warwick was selected as the second runner-up in the Grade 9-12 category. The program aims to recognize classroom teachers for accomplishments and achievements in exciting K-12 students about STEM and preparing them to use and contribute to tomorrow’s technologies.

Tabb Middle Celebrates National Library Week

Tabb Middle School (TMS) hosted a Books, Board Games & Buttered Popcorn as an after school library activity. As part of the celebration for National Library Week, TMS students discussed their favorite books, played board games, and munched on popcorn. The TMS library media center also gave away 50 books to the first 50 students who checked out books this week in honor of National Library Week.
